Harmony Books and Rodale Books is recruiting for an Editor-in-Chief, a pivotal role in our team, the company, and the industry. Harmony Books and Rodale Books are two distinct nonfiction imprints, and combined, is the industry leader in publishing prescriptive narrative non-fiction, self-improvement, health, wellness, spirituality, parenting, business empowerment, illustrated food and lifestyle books, and more. Based in New York, Harmony and Rodale are imprints under the Random House Division and part of Penguin Random House, LLC, the world's largest general trade book publisher.The Editor-in-Chief will report to and work with the President to set editorial priorities for both lists. Priorities include identifying and pursuing authors and books that will help define the future of the imprint to targeting opportunities in established and emerging categories that play to and extend the Imprint’s strengths. In setting such priorities, the position will help shape a program that speaks to and represents the diversity of our potential audiences and society.The following are some, not all, of the position’s responsibilities:Collaborate with the President to set the editorial vision and strategy.Acquire and edit anchor titles for the lists.Oversee an editorial department of nine members of varying levels of experience.Develop the team’s personal and collective goals.Mentor talent from the most inexperienced to senior levels.Foster a highly collaborative workplace centered around a culture of excellence and a community of kindness.Prioritize the values and practices of diversity and inclusion.Prioritize the needs of the team to ensure smooth running of the department.Collaborate with the Deputy Publisher to optimize processes across multiple departments and teams, including Sales, Managing Editorial, Design, Production, Publicity, and Marketing.Lead as a key ambassador for the group, articulating its mission and building relationships with our many colleagues and external partners.A typical day may require you to traverse between P&Ls and budget for titles, timely acquisition reads, a cover design meeting, account updates, consumer insights reports, and check-ins with the President and Deputy Publisher, among other meetings and tasks. Hence, a cross-disciplinary background and mindset is crucial to success.Knowing how vital this role is, we are looking for you to match the following qualifications:Deep editorial background in books or other content-rich media spaces.Previous experience managing a team of Editors or Creators is a plus, though other forms of leadership—such as through impactful creative or journalistic work or positions held in adjacent cultural organizations—will also be closely considered.Analytical mindset and the ability to talk through examples of when you’ve demonstrated this.Ability to prioritize multiple tasks regularly, balancing deadlines with a focus on standard of quality and critical relationships.Curiosity for new voices, ideas, and breaking trends with a focus on backlist conversion.Entrepreneurial spirit to channel innovation into book form.Flexible Mindset.An eye for design.Experience implementing strategies focused on diversity and inclusion across a range of areas, from hiring to training to acquisition and more.Hybrid work, including the ability to work in the New York office.We are keen to hear in a cover letter why you’re putting yourself forward for the role of next Editor-In-Chief for Harmony Books and Rodale Books.Apply now and share how you will help steer us to success as we enter a new stage in our continued growth.The salary range for this position is $180,000 - $280,000.
