GENERAL JOB SUMMARY

The Director of Coffee plays a key role at Coffee By Design. This position oversees our overall coffee operations, which includes sourcing and securing outstanding coffees that meet our standards of excellence while adhering to our core values as global citizens. The position supervises, directs, leads, and serves as a mentor to the coffee roasting team and strives to meet established goals that correspond to the overall company objectives. Goals will be achieved by focusing on process, quality, and costs while identifying opportunities to support farmers better while working to continuously improve our processes and foster a positive work environment that embraces our culture of making change happen one cup at a time.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities include:

Green Coffee Purchasing: Secure and build long-term relationships with coffee producers and importers, focusing on quality and sustainability. Forecasting and negotiating contracts are essential.

Quality Control/Analysis: Manage coffee quality control and analysis for consistency and continual improvement throughout all channels: CBD coffeehouse, online, and wholesale accounts.

Cupping and Tasting: Regular cupping and tasting, which includes green sample evaluation, production roast evaluation, blend optimization, staff, and customer education.

Roast Profile Development: Work with the Head Roaster, Roasting Associates, and Training Director to develop and maintain roast profiles.

Blend Development: Collaborate with the Head Roaster, Roasting Associates, and Training Director to develop and maintain blends.

Curate Coffee Offerings: Manage current coffee offerings, review range, and identify opportunities for offerings that align with our goal of bringing positive long-term change to specialty coffee.

Roasting: Oversee operation and maintenance of Loring Kestrel S35 and Peregrine S70 Roaster.

Inventory Control: Manage operations to guarantee sufficient par levels of coffee beans, coffee-related equipment, and other supplies.

Operations: Oversee and supervise the roasting team’s day-to-day operations—track attendance and punctuality and complete paperwork to document each for the HR/payroll record. Manage PTO requests to determine if the production schedule/demands and crewing level will allow approval and communicate this back to team members. Follow up with proper documentation for HR/payroll.

Safety: Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations in all coffee-related processes.

Marketing: Participate in Marketing and PR efforts to promote current and new coffees through origin storytelling to build awareness and drive sales.

Wholesale: Active participant in meeting with potential wholesale partners and assisting when they need coffee demonstrations, client interaction, etc.

Customer Support: Contributing to brew recipes, preparation methods, and equipment choices for serving coffee.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

DESIRED EXPERIENCE

Education and Experience

Minimum of high school diploma

Seven years working in the specialty coffee industry, including coffee roasting experience

3-5 years experience in a supervisory role

Flexibility and interest in origin travel

Engagement in Industry Organizations, which may include SCA, NCA, IWCA

Q Grader Certification a plus

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Language Skills: Ability to provide input for and assist in creating employee resources and reference materials, such as safety rules, SOPs, operating and procedure manuals, and other training materials. Ability to write routine reports, document employee relations incidents, including behavior and performance issues, and team communication/correspondence verbally and written.

Mechanical and Technological Skills: Extensive knowledge of different coffee brewing methods, roasting, and related equipment.

Computer Skills: Must have proficiency in Outlook or a similar program for using email to communicate with the team and perform required documentation. Excel and other programs are necessary for forecasting, inventory, and other daily and long-range planning.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Judgement, Reasoning, Follow-through: Creative problem solver. Ability to troubleshoot and resolve challenges, make recommendations, and develop plans for the team to implement. Ability to follow and carry out verbal and written procedures such as SOPs, safety rules, etc., and set an example for the team in applying standardized processes to the daily work. Ability to apply sound judgment, reasoning, and understanding in handling employee issues and providing constructive feedback and coaching to team members. Ability to gauge the team’s morale and foster a positive work environment. Ability to get behind leadership decisions and incentives and drive them on the floor, even when not fully agreeing with the recommended tactic/approach. Awareness and knowledge of issues/situations that involve legal compliance/liability and communicating to/involving Human Resources immediately.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Directly responsible for a team of roasting team members. Makes recommendations regarding hiring, training, employee recognition, and disciplinary decisions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here represent those that an Employee must meet to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. Success requires prolonged periods (up to 8+ hours) of standing, walking, bending, squatting, stooping, stretching, and reaching overhead. Routine lifting, pushing, or pulling of moderately heavy coffee bags and other materials, which could weigh between 50 and 100 lbs., is also required. Skill is needed in the hands and fingers to manipulate machine controls and to tighten, grasp, turn, twist, pull, push, and pinch knobs, screws, and other machine control fixtures and in handling/packaging products.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here represent those encountered by an employee while performing the essential functions of this job. This work involves exposure to certain smells, flavorings, production machinery, and moving mechanical parts. Exposure to dust, grease, and other substances found in coffee roastery and packaging environment. Exposure to noise levels is moderate (85dB) on a daily time-weighted average. Associates must wear hearing protection PPE where designated. Other special safety precautions, such as personal protective equipment (PPE) and tools, may be required to work on or around selected roaster equipment and mechanical devices.

Travel to coffee farms overseas exposes team members to unique cultures, climates, customs, and cuisines. The ability to adapt willingly to changing conditions is necessary.
