Position Summary:

The Director of Strategic Communications, Media, Community Relations, and Outreach will be responsible for crafting and executing the comprehensive communication and marketing strategy of Akron Public Schools. This executive-level position will lead and oversee all aspects of the District’s communication, both internal and external, ensuring alignment with the District’s Blueprint for Excellence – The Strategic Plan, which encompasses the District's mission and goals. The role is pivotal in building and maintaining the public image of the District, fostering strong community relationships, and effectively managing all strategic communication initiatives. The Director will collaborate closely with District leadership, in some cases legal, providing strategic counsel on all matters related to communication, especially crisis communication, and public and community relations. This role is integral to advancing the mission of Akron Public Schools and ensuring that all internal and external communication efforts contribute to the District’s long-term success.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

Community Engagement and Outreach:

Lead efforts to engage with the community, creating and nurturing partnerships that strengthen the District’s ties to local organizations, businesses, and community leaders. Build trust within the community and develop strategies that promote transparency.Oversee the central operator services to ensure efficient and effective communication flow within the District and between the District and its stakeholders.Administer public information and community relations programs in accordance with Federal and State law, District policies and administrative guidelines, and the Operating Standards for Ohio Schools.Develop and implement initiatives that engage parents and community members in the educational process and in the support of student learning, achievement, and overall wellbeing.Promote student achievement and accomplishment in the broad range of academics, athletics, and performance in District instructional programs and extracurricular/co-curricular activities and may be requested to attend activities as needed.Plan and implement a comprehensive program of internal, as well as external, public relations, District/school publications, marketing, and communications.Respond to specific requests from the Superintendent on matters affecting the community relations and operation of the District.

Media Relations:Direct and manage all media relation efforts, serving as the primary spokesperson and representative for the District. Establish and maintain strong relationships with media outlets to ensure accurate and positive coverage of District initiatives and achievements.Develop and implement media relations strategies to enhance the District's public image.Develop a system of print and technology-driven communications with the community, media outlets, and District personnel using local media, approved technologies, and District publications.Cultivate a positive working relationship with print and electronic media in promoting the needs and best interests of the District.Build and maintain relationships with journalists, editors, and other media professionals.Coordinate and manage media interviews, press conferences, and media events.Monitor media coverage and provide regular reports to senior management.Create and implement a communication, marketing, and public data plan with measurable outcomes based on our Blueprint for Excellence – The Strategic Plan.

Executive Communications:Draft speeches, statements, and messages for senior leadership.Prepare executive presentations and talking points for public appearances and internal meetings.Ensure consistency and alignment of executive communications with the District’s strategic objectives.

Content Creation and Management:Write and distribute press releases, media advisories, and other communication materials.Develop content for the District’s website, social media channels, and internal communications platforms.Oversee and manage the production of multimedia content, such as videos and infographics.

Crisis Communications:Lead the District’s crisis communications efforts, preparing and executing plans that effectively manage and mitigate public relations issues.Collaborate with the Safety and Security Department, law enforcement, and local, state, and government officials; and act as a key advisor to the Superintendent and executive leadership during times of crisis.Support the development and execution of crisis communication plans to manage and mitigate risks.Serve as a spokesperson during crises, providing accurate and timely information to the media and the public.Coordinate with legal and compliance teams to ensure appropriate messaging.

Strategic Planning:Spearhead the development and implementation of a cohesive communications strategy that supports Akron Public Schools’ vision and objectives, driving engagement and enhancing the District’s reputation among key stakeholders, including students, families, staff, and the broader community.Collaborate with the communications team, and senior leadership to develop communication strategies that support District goals.Conduct market research and media analysis to inform communication plans.Identify opportunities for proactive media engagement and thought leadership.

Internal Communications:Develop internal communication strategies to keep employees informed and engaged.Create and distribute internal newsletters, memos, and other communications.Support managing internal events, such as town hall meetings and employee forums.Develop and execute marketing strategies that enhance the District’s visibility and appeal to prospective families, staff, and partners.Utilize data-driven insights to refine and improve marketing efforts over time.

Media Training:Oversee the District’s branding and visual identity, ensuring consistent and effective use of the Akron Public Schools’ brand across all platforms. Develop and implement marketing campaigns that reinforce the District’s values and strategic priorities.Provide media training and coaching to executives and other District spokespersons prior to interviews.Develop and conduct workshops on effective communication and media interaction.Provide professional development activities that promote positive school-community relationships and timely communications.

Metrics and Evaluation:Establish metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of communication strategies and media coverage.Prepare reports and presentations on communication outcomes and media impact.Continuously improve communication practices based on feedback and performance data.

Branding and Visual Identity: Digital and Print Communications:Supervise the production of all District communications, including printed and digital media.Ensure that all content is accurate, timely, and reflective of the District’s messaging and goals.

Leadership and Management:Work closely with direct reports leading media and content strategy while providing feedback for growth and development.Foster a collaborative environment within the communications team and across departments.Perform other duties as assigned that fall under the scope of communications and marketing needs supporting the department and the District.Work in conjunction with Family and Student Services, Teaching and Learning, College and Career Academies, College Access, and Special Education to promote and support instructional services, programs, and accomplishments of all students.Maintain records as required by law, District policy, and administrative guidelines.Plan and implement a comprehensive range of District/school events (State of System, Convocation, etc.).Follow the established policies and guidelines regarding staff professionalism and grooming.Participate in school and District meetings/functions, and support District initiatives.Coordinate budget preparation and implementation.Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, staff, equipment, materials, and facilities.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:Bachelor degree from an accredited college or university in journalism, communications or public relations, or equivalent work experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS:Must maintain a valid Ohio driver’s license at all times.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:Ability to read, analyze and interpret local, state and federal laws, regulations and policies. Ability to respond to public agencies and commissions, board requests and inquiries. Ability to clarify complex legal issues in ordinary language. Ability to effectively negotiate contract agreements, provider and vendor contracts and resolve disputes.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:Ability to analyze wage and fringe benefits data, interpreting for fair and equitable negotiations. Ability to analyze forecast data for the financial stability of APS as used in negotiated agreements, vendor contracts, and general wage and benefits administration.

REASONING ABILITY:Ability to identify and define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to utilize evaluation data to improve or correct service. Ability to solve complex issues. Ability and skill in legal processes.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Must have superior communication and organizational skills, negotiation skills and problem-solving skills. Must be able to perform duties and responsibilities under stressful conditions while maintaining composure.
