TITLE: Director of Communications and Community RelationsDate: October 4, 2024Job Summary:

The Director of Communications and Community Relations serves as the District’s lead communication strategist, responsible for developing, implementing, and continuously refining a comprehensive communication and engagement strategy that aligns with District goals and vision. In close collaboration with the Superintendent and District leadership, the Director oversees the creation of internal and external communications across multiple platforms and media. This role requires a proactive leader who embodies the District’s core values and has exceptional skills in writing, content development, media relations, and fostering meaningful community partnerships.Reports To:

260 days, Full timeQualifications:Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, or related field.Five plus years of communications, marketing, public relations or related experience.Proven experience managing digital content.Must be proficient with computers, various software applications, and related technologies.Five plus years of managing/supervising people.Experience with Microsoft Office and Google Suite applications is required.Background in leading internal and/or employee communications efforts.Background in leading external and/or community/stakeholder communications efforts.Experience creating and publishing content via media outlets, web communications, and social media platforms.Essential Functions:Successfully complete District-assigned training.Organize and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.Manage/direct a small team of communications employees.Maintain an organized environment.Communicate effectively with students, staff, parents, and stakeholders verbally and in writing.Visit all MPS schools and be present at some school events, some of which will be beyond the normal work day hours.Work independently as well as with a team.Safeguard all District data.Conduct oneself as an ambassador of MPS.Other duties as assigned.Skills/Knowledge/Abilities (SKA) Required:Excellent listening, writing, grammar, and editing skills.Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both verbal and written form.Knowledge of communications and marketing techniques, including print, video, web, marketing and public information strategies.Proficiency in the use of various social media platforms (X, Facebook, Instagram, etc.).Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, staff, and the community.Ability and willingness to work under pressure and under tight time constraints as well as during emergency situations.Ability to effectively present information, listen, and respond to questions from groups of staff, students, parents, and the public.Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations, such as the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).General Description:The Director of Communications and Community Relations will be responsible for the following:Professional Conduct:Maintain a high level of ethical behavior, including confidentiality of sensitive information and data.Stay informed and follow all policies, regulations, and laws relative to the District.Perform other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent.Serves as Strategic Partner for the Superintendent:Serve as advisor to the Superintendent on matters related to communications and community relations.Create, enhance, maintain, and enforce consistent organizational branding standards and guidelines for all District communications.Draft and refine District internal and external communications and materials.Identify, in consultation with the Superintendent, projects that require development and ongoing oversight.Manage multiple projects with firm deadlines simultaneously.Ensure timeliness in the completion of assigned projects.Attend all Board of Education meetings and workshops; assist in live streaming Board meetings.Support the Superintendent, safety team, and schools with crisis communications.Attend and participate in the Superintendent Team meetings and Administrative Council.Serve as the brand ambassador for MPS and consistently convey a positive District image.Coordinate informational campaigns for the District.Connects with the Community:Communicate Board of Education’s actions to staff, students and the community.Supervise the District’s overall community relations program.Communicate District programs, instructional goals and objectives to the greater community within the context of the Board of Education’s mission and strategic plan.Respond to requests for information about the District (excluding FOIA).Actively seek input about the District and schools from the community through both qualitative and quantitative means.Serve as liaison and build partnerships with the other public entities that serve the District’s community.Coordinates District Publications:Maintain internal communications to help employees stay informed and engaged in District issues and news (e.g. website information, staff newsletter).Provide leadership on both internal and external communications, two-way community engagement, crisis communications, and public speaking.Provide resources, support, and training to help staff in their communication with parents and the community.Oversees Website/Social Media:Coordinate writing, editing, and design layouts of websites and other electronic school system publications.Manage the District’s overall social media presence.Support individual schools in developing and enhancing their social media presence.Serves as information liaison to the news media:Establish active participation in professional organizations that support the practice of school public relations and communications.Serve as the information liaison between the District and the community, including media and other public agencies.Prepare and disseminate announcements, general notices, and personal correspondence.Create audiovisual materials for community information purposes.Application Procedure:When applying for a position with the Midland Public Schools, interested candidates must complete an application in order to be considered an official applicant.
