State of Utah - Jobs The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is looking for a structural engineer to serve as the

Structures Design Lead (Engineer IV).

You will provide technical expertise for the design of bridges and structures; support Regions as a structures technical expert; provide constructability reviews; and successfully manage, coordinate and deliver quality design packages for advertisement. You will be expected to have a strong background in bridge and structures design with a clear understanding of AASHTO design codes and criteria. You will also be expected to provide mentoring to junior engineers to develop their technical competence. You will be the structural lead for several projects, and as such, will be responsible for the successful completion of design packages on time, within budget, and to the appropriate level of care. You will be expected to individually perform the design and/or checking of design related to bridges and structures or provide guidance for design related issues. You will also be expected to be the design lead for projects that are primarily structural in nature; this will require becoming familiar with the project delivery network, leading the design team through the design process, preparing project packages to advertisement including interdisciplinary coordination, tracking and facilitating the resolution of project related issues and coordinating personnel resources with the Structures Design Manager. You will also provide review and oversight of consultant designs and provide design support during construction. You will have an integral role in making recommendations to improve the various Structures Design Manuals, workflows, design software, and project delivery process. You will have an integral role in evaluating internal Structures Division practices to make recommendations on how to make changes that move UDOT more completely into the Digital Delivery environment. This effort will include opportunities for design and design review on projects leveraging Digital Delivery.Principal Duties

Scroll down to find the complete details of the job offer, including experience required and associated duties and tasks.As the Structures Design Lead you will:Provide technical expertise for structures design and the development of structures plans and specifications.Provide structural design recommendations to address design related issues during design and construction.Perform the design and/or checking of design related to bridges and structures or provide guidance for design related issues.Participate in a variety of activities including feasibility, research, concept and scoping, environmental, safety, specifications, schedules, revisions in the process of designing and developing projects.Set goals, establish priorities, manage resources, and develop concepts and approaches.Mentor junior engineers to develop their technical competence.Oversee the development, evaluation or review of plans and criteria for a variety of engineering activities; assess feasibility of proposed engineering plans, projects, and equipment.Lead design team through the design process and develop contract documents for advertisement.Manage others, delegate assignments, and direct people as they work.Supervise subordinate personnel including: hiring, determining workload and delegating assignments, training, monitoring and evaluating performance, and initiating corrective disciplinary action.Serve as a liaison with other Divisions, Agencies, and government entities, as needed.Participate in the selection of consulting engineers; provide design review and/or oversight of work performed by consulting engineers.Review projects and evaluate progress and goals; develop and oversee design schedules and budget.Monitor and verify quality control and quality assurance compliance and effectiveness; make recommendations for improvement.Minimum QualificationsMust be registered as a professional engineer (PE) in Utah.Will have at least two years of engineering experience following licensure as a PE.PreferencesPreference may be given to applicants with significant experience designing transportation structures. Hiring official may identify additional related skills and requirements as preferences in making hiring and promotion decisions.Knowledge, Skills, & AbilitiesHere are some of the knowledge, skills and abilities that are typically associated with the job, though not all-inclusive:Must speak clearly, concisely and effectively; listen to and understand information and ideas as presented verbally.Must be able to communicate information clearly, and concisely, in writing; read and understand information presented in writing.Understand the principles, theories, and practices of general engineering and civil engineering.Understand the technical issues related to structures design and construction.Possess a clear understanding of AASHTO design codes and criteria.Possess clear understanding of and hands-on experience with industry structures design software.Possess a clear understanding of UDOT plans, specifications, QMPs and applicable documents and have the ability to leverage this understanding into the design of structures.Must be able to supervise others by assigning/directing work; conducting employee evaluations, training and developing individuals, taking appropriate disciplinary/corrective actions, and making recommendations.Must be able to identify the best person for a task, delegate assignments, and direct people as they work.Must be able to make a decision or solve a problem by using logic to identify and analyze key facts, explore alternatives, draw conclusions, and propose viable quality solutions.Must be able to work with or contribute to a work group or team to complete assigned task(s).Must be able to lead teams and understand the practices of group dynamics and/or team development.Must be able to establish objectives and specific strategies and actions to achieve those objectives.Understand the importance of quality work; support consistency within projects.Must be able to manage a workforce to ensure fair employment practices.Supplemental InformationHere is some information of which you should be aware:Travel may be required throughout the state.Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Region Director/Group Leader.Why Should You Join Our Team?The work we do matters.
