C&EN produces authoritative, award-winning independent journalism from around the world of chemistry, including research, education, industry, funding, and regulatory policy. C&EN seeks to service audiences across the global chemical enterprise with print and digital formats.Job Summary:C&EN is looking for a talented Executive Editor, Policy and Regulation, to join our team of Executive Editors. The role will be a crucial part of a leadership team delivering content for a global audience in and around the global chemical enterprise.Primary Job Accountabilities – What You’ll Do:Coordinate C&EN’s coverage of regulation and science policy, focusing on national and international science policy, pollution control policy, major regulatory agencies, climate change, and more.Help conceive, shape, and edit content across a range of formats, ensuring accuracy and compelling storytelling.Work with executive editors and platform editors to cover major news developments across disciplines.Oversee the quality of work and professional development of the team of policy reporters.Collaborate with C&EN’s art directors and creative team to deliver optimal audience experiences.Contribute to audience development targets and enhance our value proposition as a journalism outfit.Nurture contacts in the regulatory and science policy communities.Contribute to editorial strategy decisions across the newsroom.What You’ll Bring – Education & Skills:An undergraduate degree in chemistry or a related scientific field, or equivalent experience.Achievement in growing editorial coverage and developing audiences internationally.Strong editorial judgment, journalistic values, and ethics.Knowledge of SEO and social media best practices.Experience delivering compelling web-based journalism for an international audience.Up-to-date knowledge of technologies for providing digital journalism effectively.Dynamic and proactive self-starter with strong analytical skills.Excellent organizational and time-management skills.High comfort levels with change and occasional ambiguity.What You’ll Bring – Experience:A minimum of 5 years of experience as a government or policy journalist, including 3 years of editing content across formats.Experience conceptualizing and developing engaging and accurate stories for a scientific audience.Experience managing journalists through organizational change.Experience in managing people, production, projects, and budgets.What You Can Expect:ACS believes in the strength of diversity in all its forms, seeking to reflect these values in its coverage. Some travel (up to 15%) may be required.This role is based in our Washington, DC office.
