The Communications Director contributes to Department and independently oversees a comprehensive marketing and communications program for the Department of Family Community Medicine (FCM), which includes written, visual, digital and electronic communications. The role will partner with FCM leadership, faculty, staff, trainees and other key stakeholders to develop and execute organizational communication and market branding strategy in alignment with overarching brand and communications strategies of the UCSF enterprise and, where appropriate, UCSF Health. The Communications Director is responsible for leading, developing and managing all aspects of internal/external marketing and communications, including overseeing multi-channel content including: websites, newsletters, annual reports, social media, fundraising, etc.

This position requires extensive experience in all aspects of marketing/communications, including strong writing and editing skills, experience managing social media platforms and familiarity with publishing in peer-reviewed medical journals. The individual must have a high degree of organization, initiative, ability to interact with many diverse personalities and function effectively under the stress of competing priorities. Communications Director serves in an autonomous capacity as the primary point of contact on behalf of the department to the UCSF community, donors, alumni, national and international organizations and the public at-large. The individual in this position must demonstrate good judgment and critical thinking in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions and requires a high level of professionalism and diplomacy.

Department Description

The Department of Family & Community Medicine (DFCM) is engaged in research, teaching, training, service, and clinical activities located at seven primary UCSF and leased sites in San Francisco. The Mission of the UCSF Department of Family and Community Medicine is to improve health through excellence and innovation in patient care, education, research, advocacy, and community empowerment.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Minimum 5 years of relevant experience.

Advanced knowledge and understanding of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues.

Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills.

Excellent analytical, critical thinking, project management, and problem recognition, avoidance, and resolution skills.

Thorough knowledge of location protocols and channels for communication internally and externally.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced knowledge and understanding of technical applications to direct professional technical staff.

Advanced knowledge of the organization, including its mission, vision, goals, policies, and infrastructure.
