Overview:

Elite Editing is a full-service editing and writing firm that produces high-quality content for a wide variety of clients. Along with our sister company, Elite Authors, we offer content, publishing, and creative support for companies of all sizes.

We are looking for a highly skilled editor of fiction, nonfiction, and content writing who also has familiarity with design. They must have people-management acumen, service growth insight, and savvy remote communication skills.

This is a full-time remote role that requires availability Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm [EST/PST] or a portion thereof (if based in a different time zone). Responsibilities:

The Editorial Manager for the emerging services line will primarily focus on editorial quality control and ensuring successful onboarding, training, and integration of talent across the team. Below is a breakdown of the five core responsibilities:

Capacity Management (Staffing, Hiring, etc.):

  • Strategic oversight of all emerging services editorial work
  • Looks ahead on demand and resource availability, and communicates to the Executive Editor on what resources are needed
  • Maintain a deep bench of freelancers to ensure high project volume and out-of-office coverage
  • Assist the hiring team with reviewing and grading editorial applications and matching writers’ and editors’ skills to projects and service lines

Leadership of Content Teams:

  • Lead and motivate teams to perform at a high level and continually grow their skillset
  • Support editorial teams, providing guidance and conducting 1:1s when needed
  • Focus on team relationships and maintain trust through communication, expectation setting, and meeting editorial standards
  • Review and assess internal team satisfaction or complaints for escalation to senior management

Training:

  • Successfully oversee or delegate onboarding and training of internal teams to ensure the talent pipeline is aligned to best support client needs
  • Support team leads with training, upskilling, certifications, and other opportunities

Scoping Support and Editorial Issue Escalation:

  • Make internal and external recommendations; Executive Editor to make final decisions
  • Spearhead or delegate the creation and implementation of style guides and process frameworks
  • Support setup of the editorial workflow for new clients
  • Reviews and assesses editorial complaints from clients and helps answer client editorial queries

Editorial Quality Control:

  • Directly manage service line editorial leads (freelancers or full-time employees)
  • Serve as a backup editor in emergencies when freelancers are not available
  • Assess or direct the assessment of new editor progress
  • Perform regular audits on freelancers
  • Support process enhancement; work cross-functionally to determine root causes of customer success or failure and adjust product or process as needed
  • Stay up-to-date and knowledgeable on current styles and trends per client (newsletters, webinars, style-guides, portals, etc.)
  • Other duties as required

A successful candidate will:

  • Have a finely honed knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style, 18th edition (and familiarity with other style guides—chiefly the Associated Press Stylebook [AP] and the American Psychological Association Manual [APA]).
  • Be a strong communicator. You have clear and effective written and verbal communication skills, which help you to connect well with others.
  • Be able to prioritize and time block. You have an innate ability to prioritize and adapt to recognize when something goes off process and communicate quickly.
  • Be organized and confident. You are flexible, composed, and able to prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously while confidently interacting with clients, teammates, senior leaders, and vendors.
  • Be a driven, solutions-oriented leader, and a creative problem solver. You are united with teammates and follow through on commitments.
  • Be savvy with office technology and applications, and comfortable interacting, training, and managing teams in a remote environment (Gmail, Slack, Zoom, Dropbox, etc.).

  • Get excited about a good process document.

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of team management
  • 5+ years of editing experience
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field of study or equivalent work experience
  • Mastery of the English language and The Chicago Manual of Style, 18th edition (and a passing knowledge of other style guides)
