Position Description

This is a non-civil service announcement. The Grants Writer will focus primarily on crafting high-quality grant proposals to secure funding for various city initiatives. This role requires strong writing skills and the ability to convey the city’s vision and project goals effectively to funders.

The Grants Writer will report to the Director of Advancement and Strategic Partnerships and collaborate closely with internal and external stakeholders, including the Grants Advancement Manager, to write compelling grant proposals that clearly articulate the need, potential impact, and sustainability of the proposed projects and programs.

The Office of the Mayor of Nashville is committed to enhancing community well-being through innovative projects and strategic initiatives. We seek to secure funding to support programs that address the needs of our diverse population.

Mayoral staff (non-civil service) receive 15 days of Paid Time Off and 12 sick days annually.

Typical Duties

Research and identify grant opportunities from federal, state, and private sources that align with mayoral priorities.

Write compelling grant proposals that clearly articulate project goals, methodologies, and anticipated outcomes.

Collaborate with city departments and stakeholders to gather relevant data, narratives, and supporting materials for proposals.

Ensure proposals are compliant with funder requirements and submitted by deadlines.

Develop and maintain a library of grant writing resources, including templates and past successful proposals.

Stay updated on trends in grant funding and best practices in grant writing.

Assist in the preparation of supplementary materials, such as letters of support, budgets, and timelines.

Provide training and support to city staff on effective grant writing techniques and strategies.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree and 2 years of experience in successful grant writing OR high school diploma/equivalent with 6 years of experience in successful grant writing.

Must submit a resume and cover letter.

Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Nonprofit Management, Communication, or related field.

Experience with federal grants or cooperative agreements under Code of Federal Relations (CFR) Title 2 - Grants and Agreements.

Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills.

Strong research abilities to identify funding opportunities and understand grant guidelines.

Familiarity with city government operations and community needs.

Relevant professional certification(s) (e.g., CGMS, GPCI, CFRE, CGFM, etc.)

Knowledge of federal and state funded grant programs and initiatives, as well as knowledge and experience with 2 CFR 200 grants and agreements procurement and compliance standards.

Experience addressing strategic issues in grant administration operations including issues with complex political and programmatic elements.

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including government officials, community organizations, and private partners.
