The University of Southern Mississippi is seeking a full-time (nine-month), tenure-track appointment at the rank of assistant professor in graphic design. Salary and benefits are competitive; position begins August 2025. Review of applications will begin December 1, 2024 and will continue until the position is filled.

Job Summary

The Art and Design Program at the University of Southern Mississippi seeks a talented graphic designer to teach all levels of graphic design in a primarily print-based curriculum including, but not limited to, layout, typography, branding, motion graphics and Web-based courses. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of excellence in graphic design along with the ability to engage and mentor students at all skill levels and development. The candidate must be able to teach introductory through advanced classes in graphic design. Other service and courses may be taught depending on departmental need. The teaching load is three courses per semester. Other duties will include advising, recruiting and committee work.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Teach a 3-course load per semester and contribute to curriculum development.

Advise and mentor students within the Graphic Design program.

Maintain an active body of scholarly research/creative activities.

Work effectively with the faculty in program and curriculum development.

Contribute to the mission of the university and the profession through active participation in service.

Stay engaged with the wider field with regard to current developments.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

M.F.A. or equivalent in graphic design, visual communications or interactive design from an accredited institution is required.

Candidate must have demonstrated ability to engage in effective teaching in higher education.

Candidate must also have the ability to create a record of recognized creative/scholarly work and demonstrate the ability to develop a body of work suitable for tenure and promotion.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of disciplinary content and the ability to teach toward program learning objectives and to assess student learning.

Demonstrated ability to deliver accurate and quality communication (verbal and written) in a timely manner to diverse populations.

Experience setting clear performance expectations and providing meaningful feedback.

Ability to collaborate with creative colleagues and to effectively mentor students.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference is given to candidates who specialize in beginning and intermediate web design.

Three years of professional work experience or related teaching experience at the university level is preferred.
