State of NC Internship - Groundwater Quality Data Collection, Analysis, Visualiz

Job Duties: Effective communication of ambient groundwater quality data to the public in a web-based application. Use groundwater data to improve our understanding of NCs aquifers. Work with the Groundwater Resources staff to develop data analysis and web visualization processes that present the current groundwater quality data to internal and public audiences. Analyses and visualizations could pertain to drinking water, surface water-groundwater interactions, comparing groundwater chemistry in different aquifers, GIS mapping of groundwater chemistry.
Major Task to be Performed: Utilize the groundwater quality data collected by staff to answer questions about groundwater aquifers. Research data analysis products by DWR, USGS, and EPA to determine how DWR should present data to the public. The intern will make recommendations on or develop web-based communication of water quality data (e.g. data visualizations, maps, graphics). Assist in water quality field sampling and data management tasks.
Final Product or Outcome Anticipated: Recommendations and products of sampling data results for the DWR website. Report on data analysis results. The intern will gain valuable skills in data collection, analysis and visualization, and communication.
Academic Majors Desired: Geology, Environmental Science, Natural Resources, Geography, Data Science, Environmental Technology, GIS, Computer/Data Science, Chemistry, Agricultural/Biological/Environmental Engineering, Web Development.
2024 State of North Carolina Internship Period: Monday, May 19 - Friday, July 25, 2025
Knowledge of data gathering techniques and procedures; Ability to analyze, manipulate and evaluate information including the use of software; organize field studies; communicate with the public and clients; prepare written reports; and work with considerable independence.
* An applicant must be a permanent North Carolina resident attending a college, university, law school, community college or technical institute in North Carolina or a North Carolina resident attending an equivalent institution out of state.* Applicants must carry a 2.5 or greater overall grade point average on a 4.0 scale.* Applicant must be at least 18 years old by January 1, 2025.* Applicants must be continuing their education in the fall following their participation in the program.* To qualify for a law internship, applicants must have completed at least one year of law school before the beginning of the internship, unless other majors are listed.* Students having previously held paid internships with this program are not eligible to apply.* Applicants must be willing and able to work full-time for the entire 10-week internship. Applicants must be able to provide legal proof of identity and work authorization within three working days of employment.
