Need exceptional journalist to join our growing diocese!

Do you thrive on the adventure of journalism? The Diocese of Charlotte is looking for a passionate, curious and innovative journalist to capture the beauty, goodness and teachings of our Catholic faith. You'll cover events and write news and feature stories for the award-winning Catholic News Herald and an array of digital platforms. You will also help develop visual content, including photos and videos. The position promises room to grow with an experienced team at an exciting time in one of the nation's fastest growing dioceses. At least 3 years of experience, plus a bachelor's degree in journalism, marketing or related field is required. Bilingual English-Spanish skills are a plus.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Cover events and write news and feature stories, as well as other content for the diocese's information digital channels including: the Catholic News Herald and its website, charlottediocese.org, Facebook, Instagram, the diocese's intranet and other internal communications
  • Collect, analyze and organize information (from sources, leads, wire, etc.) to develop story ideas and produce content for publication internally or externally
  • Assist in the development of visual and multimedia content, from idea through publication phase, to include written and visual components such as taking photos or suggesting graphics to illustrate content
  • Produce clean, accurate and compelling content; follow journalism best practices in structure, style and presentation; and deliver at length by deadline
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with key diocesan constituencies including the bishop and other clergy, principals, department heads, ministry leaders and parishioners
  • Strive to capture on all content channels the diocese's diversity, its parishes and faith communities, and its people

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist with editing and proofreading others' content as needed
  • Other related duties as assigned


Requirements

  • At least 3+ years of experience producing content, plus a bachelor's degree in journalism, marketing or related field.
  • Familiarity with the Catholic Church, its mission and teachings.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud and MS Office software.
  • Familiarity with website content management systems such as Joomla and WordPress and audio and video editing software a plus.
  • Familiarity with using social media (as a professional) and digital media best practices.
  • Excellent writing, proofreading and editing skills; ability to work efficiently and meet deadlines without compromising quality or accuracy; and demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively to accomplish common objectives.
  • Other key qualifications include enthusiasm, creativity, responsiveness, and exemplary organizational and interpersonal skills.
