WHO YOU ARE:
An experienced professional content writer with print and web publication experience who excels in writing and developing compassionate communication materials for a diverse audience. You thrive either working on your own or with our team and enjoy developing professionally. Note: This is not an entry-level position.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
Write and produce customer-friendly content including internet pages, publications, standard operating procedures, public outreach, training materials, and policies for the Unemployment Insurance Division. The work also includes researching, organizing, and editing according to AP Style, as well as making documents accessible. The Technical Writer I-II performs complex to advanced (senior-level) writing. Works under general to limited supervision, with moderate to considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Telework is not guaranteed.
YOU WILL BE TRUSTED TO:
-Communicate with diverse groups of customers across Texas, including individuals and employers.
-Rewrite complex language and jargon and into clear, concise, and easy-to-read plain language.
-Work on communication projects with team members and UI Division staff and management.
-Develop creative projects that include collaboration on dynamic designs and engaging language.
-Possibly provide guidance to others.
- Perform related work as assigned.
YOU QUALIFY WITH:
-Technical Writer I: Six months of full-time experience in technical writing, journalism, or communications work.
-Technical Writer II: One year of full-time experience in technical writing, journalism, or communications work.
-Both Levels: Relevant academic credits may be applied toward experience qualifications for this position.
YOU ARE A GREAT FIT WITH:
-One to three years' professional experience as a writer
-Experience writing for diverse audiences, both individuals and to a wider public audience
-Strong research and interview skills
- Strong skills in proofreading and editing one's own work as well as others'
-Expert skills in grammar, spelling and punctuation
-Experience with the AP Style Guide and/or the Chicago Manual of Style
-Strong attention to detail
- Experience in print publishing, publication design and/or web publishing
-Being a motivated self-starter able to conceptualize, propose and initiate new procedures and work quickly while managing multiple priorities and frequent interruptions
-Professional experience working with communications software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, and web design tools

Duty requires up to 10% travel within the state of Texas and the ability to lift 15 pounds. Will work 40 hours a week during hours of operation Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Occasional overtime (evenings, weekends, and holidays) may be required. Management will set schedule.
