LIBRARIAN I TECHNOLOGY

GRADE: 20

ANNUAL PAY RANGE: $45,028 - $67,541

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class performs a variety of professional library duties requiring the application of library guidelines and standards in public communications, circulating materials, reference transactions, and program planning and implementation as well as professional library work requiring the application of library techniques. Duties include providing excellent customer service to meet user circulation and reference needs; reader's advisory; planning, promoting, and conducting programs and outreach services; engaging in collection development; and maintaining statistical reports. Work requires considerable knowledge of standard library methods, procedures and practices. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Deputy Director and is evaluated through conferences, observations, reports, and the general response of the public. Considerable judgment and discretion are required in performing all library functions.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

  • In consultation with the Assistant Director Technical Services, concentrates on library services in digital resources and automation, including the troubleshooting of technology in the library and collaboration with the TOSP IT Department and vendors for the resolution of issues. Works with other staff to plan, organize, promote, produce, and evaluate library programs and events for customers of all ages.
  • Works to make technology more accessible to patrons through tools such as technology tutorials, programs, and one-on-one technology appointments.
  • Produces reports, calendar submissions, flyers, social media posts, and other promotional, informational, and instructional materials in print and digital formats and platforms.
  • Coordinates SPARK and Smart Locker services, including troubleshooting problems, stocking and collection development, and staff training.
  • Works as a team with other library staff to keep the Library website up to date.
  • Assesses customer information and service needs, provides appropriate resources, and provides instruction and assistance to customers in locating, accessing, and borrowing library print and electronic resources.
  • Engages in collection development tasks of assessing needs, analyzing usage, and making recommendations for selecting and deselecting materials for assigned subject areas, following guidelines of the library’s collection development policy.
  • Works to order, receive, process, and distribute collection materials to the public.
  • Conducts readers’ advisory interview sessions with customers as appropriate and suggests titles and resources.
  • Researches and processes inter-library loan requests as required.
  • Works in acquisitions to produce copy and original cataloging for new and gift materials using electronic MARC record database and enters record into library database.
  • Greets the public as they arrive and makes them feel welcome.
  • Designs evaluation tools and produces relevant statistical reports.
  • Uses all software and hardware to fullest advantage to provide appropriate information to library patrons and conduct transactions.
  • Makes referrals to other staff and other resources outside the library as appropriate.
  • Maintains proper order and condition of all library materials.
  • Trains and directs volunteers or Library pages to assist with appropriate tasks.
  • Receives incoming telephone calls and emails, responding to inquiries or referring to appropriate staff.
  • Works as a team member to complete basic library tasks such as daily cash accounting, opening and closing the library, shelving, and mail services as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Considerable knowledge of the principals, practices, and methods of Library Science.
  • Considerable knowledge of common library policies and procedures, research methods, and the use of various types of informational materials and resources in the library.
  • Considerable knowledge of and facility with computer applications, including MS Office programs.
  • Ability to trouble-shoot problems with library public computers and automation software.
  • Ability to plan and present library programs effectively, including expertise in incorporating various library materials and media.
  • Working knowledge of spelling, grammar, and vocabulary.
  • Ability to produce written documents that are accurate, clear, and complete.
  • Ability to follow established procedures and to perform work requiring considerable detail.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team to accomplish common goals.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development.

  • Ability to bend, reach, and lift up to 25 lbs. in order to handle book trucks, shelve books, assist patrons, and organize shelves.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Master's degree in library science or master’s degree in an equivalent field and library experience at professional or paraprofessional level is required. Must have a valid North Carolina driver's license with an excellent driving record.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to bend, reach, and lift up to 25 lbs. in order to handle book trucks, shelve books, assist patrons, and organize shelves.
