Job Description
Epiphany Parish in Washington DC is seeking a Director of Sacred Music; this is part time role and will report to the Pastor.
DIRECTOR OF SACRED MUSIC
Under the supervision of the Pastor, the Director of Sacred Music is responsible for the overall execution of the church’s music ministry, with a pastoral approach, in line with church documents and the Pastor’s vision for sacred music.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES
- Play the organ for two weekend masses, masses on holy days, and other masses as assigned.
- Potentially provide music for Parish Holy Hour, Lenten series, and other non-liturgical devotions.
- Develop and train a Parish choir. Recruit and train cantor(s).
- In consultation with the Pastor, program music with the goal of integrating the church’s rich musical tradition into the weekend liturgies.
- Develop a core congregational repertoire and determine best practices to ensure the "full and active participation" of those at mass.
- Assist Wedding couples in planning music for Nuptial Masses and Wedding Ceremonies. Play the organ for Weddings. Coordinate other musicians for weddings (e.g. cantor).
- Assist, with the Pastor, in the planning of music for Funeral Masses. Coordinate other musicians for funerals (e.g. cantor).
- Assist the Pastor in the layout and production of Orders of Worship.
- Oversee the maintenance and tuning of the parish's pipe organ and grand piano.
- In consultation with the Pastor, explore additional opportunities for Parish devotions and events, incorporating music. For example:
Christmas Concert/Lessons and Carols; Vespers and Benediction; Tenebrae; Chanting of select hours of the Divine Office during the Triduum; Eucharistic; Procession on Corpus Christi; Palm Sunday Procession; Other Processions and Devotions
- In consultation with the Pastor, explore additional opportunities for community musical engagement (Duke Ellington School, for example)
- Take a proactive approach in forging a positive and pastorally sensitive relationship with the members of the Parish. Attend parish events regularly and engage in parish life as fully as possible.
- Coordinate and work with the Korean Choir for joined Masses.
