Fortune is hiring: Reporter in New York

Fortune, New York, NY, United States

Reporter

Do you eagerly await the latest inflation numbers? Are you wondering how the AI revolution will play out over the next 10 years? Do you find yourself trying to explain how we might be heading into a recession, even with incredibly low unemployment?

Then you might be a perfect fit for a role writing about the day's biggest business and economic news for Fortune.

We are looking for a self-motivated reporter who is passionate about bringing business, econ, and tech journalism to a wider audience. Someone who can pitch a great story, report it out, and collaborate to execute great coverage and must-reads.

The reporter in this position will file breaking news, as well as news analysis and enterprise articles. They should be comfortable juggling a mixture of stories, working on tight deadlines, and pursuing original reporting on a fast-paced, fast-growing business news desk.

You will have:
•At least 3 years of full-time newsroom experience, preferably in a similar role, including full-time fellowships
•A digital-first mindset and voracious reading habits
•Interest in finance, markets, Internet culture, tech, and economics, and the desire to dig deeper into a beat
•The ability to concisely connect the dots between data and real-world events
•The ability to work quickly and collaboratively as part of a tight-knit, fast-paced team

Candidates should have...
•An interest in covering the biggest stories of the day
•A growing set of expert economist sources and financial experts who can help break down trends for readers
•A nose for identifying overlooked stories, or unusual and unexpected developments
•A devotion to detail and accuracy
•The ability to get up to speed and turn around copy quickly, and the metabolism to write multiple stories a day
•Experience using reader data to inform and inspire story choices
•Experience creating charts using a tool like Datawrapper

Fortune's U.S. headquarters is in New York City. This role is based in the U.S., and candidates should have authorization to work in the U.S. Candidates based in the NYC area or near one of our other offices will be on a hybrid schedule, with the potential for an in-office requirement several days a week.

A few of Fortune's perks and benefits:
•Flexible working hours and schedule: We expect our editorial staff to show up consistently and meet deadlines, but there's no need to take PTO for a midday doctor's appointment or to leave an hour early for a flight. Working in news can mean nontraditional hours, and we work with each staffer to make sure there's appropriate comp time for special projects.
•20 vacation days and 2 personal days on top of 11 company holidays and an honor-based sick leave policy
•Health, dental, and vision coverage (90% paid for individuals and families), along with flexible spending accounts where Fortune contributes to your HSA
•401(k) plan
•Generous parental leave
•Dependent care, commuter, and cell phone benefits
•Tuition reimbursement program
•A commitment to an open, inclusive, and diverse work culture

Some great candidates may not fit neatly into what we've described above or have key skills we haven't thought of. If that's you, don't hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.

All applicants should submit a resume and cover letter explaining briefly how this role is a fit for your background, skills, and career goals.

Pay range: $75,000 - $85,000 per year
