Are you an accomplished civil engineer with diverse design and project management experience? Are you looking for a leadership position that doesnt require you to buy your way in? UMIAQ Design, LLC, in Anchorage, Alaska is looking for a dynamic Engineering Manager to lead its Engineering Department. This is an excellent opportunity to join a well-established firm with strong customer relationships and a large project backlog that will allow for a smooth transition into the leadership role.
The successful candidate will lead a department with a strong core of professional personnel and a sizable backlog of interesting and profitable projects. They will have extensive, well-rounded experience and knowledge in programming and executing a wide range of engineering projects throughout Alaska. In addition, they will have the leadership skills necessary to successfully guide existing project teams, build new project teams, and strengthen/expand client relationships.
The successful candidate will be supported by the current Acting Engineering Manager/General Manager to allow for a smooth transition. The General Manager will work closely with the new Engineering Manager as they become familiar with the Engineering Department and UMIAQ Design.

Responsibilities:RESPONSIBILITIES
The Engineering Manager is a Registered Professional Civil Engineer responsible for the planning, operation, and quality control of the Engineering Department. The Department staff consists of multidiscipline registered Professional Engineers (Civil, Environmental and Mechanical), Engineers in Training, Project Managers, AutoCAD Drafters and Administrative Support personnel.
Duties of the Engineering Department Manager include (but are not limited to):
Planning
- Assisting strategic planning and development of business plan and budget
- Project and resource scheduling
Department Operations
- Developing and strengthening client relationships
- Proposal development
- Contract negotiations and administration (Client and Sub-Consultants contracts)
- Managing Sub-Consultants
- Coordination with Architecture and Survey Department Managers
- Engineering design and other project related duties
- Establishing and maintaining Department/Company/Corporation procedures
- Invoicing and processing of Accounts Payable invoices/receipts
- Personnel scheduling
- Recruiting department personnel
- Conducting performance evaluations
- Review/approval of direct report timesheets
- Training and mentoring staff
Quality Control
- Peer Review
- Serving as Person in Responsible Charge for Corporate Civil Engineering Professional Registration
Qualifications:
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering, or equivalent.
Experience
- 15 years of experience in the Consulting Engineering field
- 10 years of experience as a Registered Professional Civil Engineer in Alaska (or a state with Alaska comity)
- Design and project management of various types of civil engineering projects
- Working with various professional services contracting methods
Skills

- Team player with good interpersonal skills.
Knowledge
- Understanding of Human Resources management
- Understanding of financial reporting using accrual-based accounting methods
- Understanding of Building and Life/Fire Safety Codes
Preferred
- Experience in Alaska, especially rural Alaska
Experience with road design and/or water & wastewater systems
