Job Description The Digital News Design group at The New York Times is looking for a technologicallysavvy interactive designer/editor to join our award-winning multimedia editors in the newsroom. You are a pragmatic innovator whose solutions elicit responses that justify the effort and investment. You bring creative ideas for the presentation of the work produced across the newsroom. This is a hybrid position based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance. Responsibilities : Work with reporters, editors, producers, designers and software developers to craft rich, multimedia experiences for a wide range of projects including news and enterprise stories, across multiple platforms. Help determine the needs and possibilities for graphics and multimedia packages, including statistical visualizations, video, photography, audio, and animations Make exceptional contributions to our journalism Engage with others to foster an environment of learning and constructive dialogue about our work. Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world. This role reports to an assistant editor. Basic Qualifications : 5 years of digital design experience with a portfolio that demonstrates high quality and relevant work. Expertise in multiple areas of design such as layout, typography, UX, product design, art direction, motion. Experience conveying visual ideas and complex interactions with wire-frames, static mockups and prototypes. Front-end web development experience using HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Have demonstrated the ability to conceive and implement presentations that incorporate audio, video, still images and text in sophisticated ways across various digital platforms. A strong and varied portfolio demonstrating high quality, relevant digital design work in the form of a website/accessible URL. (Please include it in the application.) Preferred Qualifications : Attention to detail and excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to meet deadlines and operate in a daily, unpredictable news production environment. Available to work a flexible schedule that may include nights and weekends. Smart UX sensibility Enthusiasm for designing and making great products and experiences as well as for current events Ability to work collaboratively with a mixed-media team Experience implementing game mechanics and other storytelling techniques on the web. This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY. The annual base pay range for this role is between $111,711.62 and $136,000.00.
