Job Description

The Dallas Morning News is looking for an experienced journalist to join our local government accountability team as a deputy editor.

This team strives to produce meaningful stories and watch over local governments in the country's ninth-largest city and fourth-largest metro area. Our emphasis is on writing meaningful, people-driven enterprise work that has the potential to transform Dallas and the DFW Metroplex, while also keeping watch over the day-to-day operations of the entities that have daily impact on the people who live here.

Our goal is to be the first, best and most trusted news source in Texas and the No. 1 regional news organization in the U.S.

Our local government team has produced significant stories recently;
  • A ransomware attack on the city of Dallas that continues to have impacts on the city and its IT department almost a year later.
  • The abrupt resignation of the city manager, the significant payout he received to resign and his hiring shortly after as city manager in Austin.
  • Dallas' failure to effectively use more than $2 million in federal funding that was destined to help remove lead paint from older homes, many of them in underserved communities.
  • Dallas' efforts to bring the WNBA's Wings to a downtown arena that's part of an effort to create a new entertainment district in the city.
  • Disarray in the Dallas County judicial system that resulted from implementing a new software system and led to delayed trials and defendants getting lost in the county jail.

They will work with the government accountability editor to coach a team of at least seven reporters, emphasizing reporting and writing skills. This editor needs to be the growth and development of the journalists in our newsroom and will be working with reporters to help them exercise solid news judgment, build strong sourcing, turn those sources into scoops, and create insightful enterprise work and projects.
