Job Description
The Dallas Morning News is seeking an editorial writer to join its award-winning Editorial Board. The Editorial Board is responsible for The News' opinion content, including its editorials, op-eds, political recommendations, Texan of the Year selection and the DMN Voter Guide.
The editorial writer is a key member of the board, helping to shape the institutional opinion of The Dallas Morning News. The successful candidate will be an excellent journalist first, with strong writing and reporting talents, the ability to write quickly and accurately and with a breadth of understanding of matters of importance globally, nationally, in Texas and in our own backyard.
An editorial writer should be prepared to develop expertise and sources in important areas of coverage, from local government to foreign affairs with the ability to analyze trends and draw conclusions. The writer will regularly meet with leaders of business, government, nonprofits and other arenas and should be ready to represent The Dallas Morning News.
The successful candidate will be eager to dig in with original reporting on matters of local, regional and statewide importance. Our board prides itself on opinions that are based on our own reporting as well as the work of our newsroom colleagues and other sources. We also invite editorial board members to submit columns for consideration under their own bylines. Finally, we expect a board member to be prepared to solicit op-eds from community leaders, expert sources and others.
Editorial writers are deeply involved in contributing to the board's Areas of Engagement, where we try to create social and policy change for the better. Working on the Editorial Board is a deeply collaborative process where differences of opinion are common. Candidates should be familiar with the editorial positions of The News and feel comfortable that they could write similar editorials. An editorial writer must be able to function as a member of an integrated team, understanding that disagreement can come without disagreeableness and that the board works to represent The Dallas Morning News for the betterment of our community.
The Dallas Morning News has a distinguished history of journalistic excellence, having won nine Pulitzer Prizes. For more than 137 years, The News has been committed to high standards as it covers one of the most important and vibrant markets in the country. North Texas often leads the country in population growth and is frequently on the short list for some of the largest world headquarters relocations.
