Chief Photojournalist

WATN WLMT-TV / ABC24 News, the TEGNA-owned station in Memphis, Tennessee, is looking for a highly skilled artistic Chief Photojournalist who can create shareable and exciting content for television and our digital platforms. We want a photojournalist who can tell great stories on their own or with a team. In this role, you will lead and mentor your staff of photojournalists, visual storytellers, and editors. You will also work alongside the assistant news director to train and coach our multiskilled journalists.

Our ideal candidate is familiar with the latest photography, editing tools, and techniques. They create unique and exciting content on all platforms. They are proficient with live news-gathering tools and can participate in live performances on-air and on live streaming when necessary. They also must be eager to help grow and develop journalists in a fast-paced news market.

Responsibilities:

  • Train, manage, evaluate, and help develop a team of photojournalists, visual storytellers, multiskilled journalists, and editors.
  • Manage news gathering equipment and fleet of vehicles.
  • Cover breaking news, general assignment, sports, feature, investigative, and political news stories. Produce news stories that are unique and captivating.
  • Edit, file and post a variety of video elements including voice-overs, packages, high-end animations and bumpers.
  • Operate non-linear edit systems, experience with Edius and Adobe Creative Cloud (Premiere & After Effects) is a plus.
  • Produce original content on-air and on all digital platforms that evoke emotion and tell compelling stories.
  • Use creative production techniques such as graphics and new forms of media (viewer pictures, webcam interviews, etc.) to enhance stories.
  • Oversee video library and support archive digitization.
  • Will produce and publish content to our online platforms.
  • Lead field logistics for special event coverage.
  • Work closely with the rest of the news management team for both short-term and long-term planning.
  • Perform other tasks as required by News Director and Assistant News Director.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism and/or communications, or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Proven experience as a digital video storyteller with strong camera and editing skills
  • Experience with Edius and field gear preferred.
  • Ability to prioritize and address multiple project with varying production timelines
  • Licensed Drone Pilot
  • Must be energetic, positive and a great team builder and leader
  • Must be a highly motivated self-starter, able to work well alone and as part of a team
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
