Behind the scenes, but ahead of the curve: help us develop the next-generation public broadcaster.

Created in 2015 to align, lighten and modernize infrastructure, the Technology & Infrastructure (T & I) team is the backbone and the future forward arm of CBC/Radio-Canada. We are the people that make stuff work. We make connections; between media content, systems, people and places. We are the space in between.

A place with purpose. CBC/Radio-Canada has always been a highly regarded pioneer of media technology. Not just in Canada, but around the world. Today, we're transforming ourselves from conventional radio and television broadcaster into a modern digital media company. Technology is the driving force and we are the team making it happen.

This is a hybrid position with a mix of in-office and remote work. Work arrangements will be discussed with hiring managers per departmental guidelines.

Your role

We're setting the standard worldwide as we pioneer a real-time, media-over-IP environment for our production and broadcast operations. Join us on this technologically challenging and rewarding journey as our new Senior Systems Administrator (Media Over IP). In this role, you'll be responsible for real-time infrastructure and related practices. You'll also provide senior technical support and solutions as well as troubleshoot moderate to very complex problems encountered in our critical real-time environment. You'll work with cutting-edge technologies, including but not limited to Arista networks, PTP, IP protocols, Lawo VSM, AMCS and new technology standards SMPTE 2110 and AES67.

What you'll do:
  • Establish operating procedures, methods, standards and official methodologies for the Corporation's telecom operations.
  • Configure systems for unattended operation and remote diagnostics and recovery.
  • Plan, configure and implement real-time systems to fulfil requirements for uninterrupted 24-7 operations.
  • Plan, lead and execute upgrades.
  • Maintain supported systems by following previously developed formal methodologies and change management processes.
  • Plan and carry out testing of changes in a lab environment before implementation.
  • Act as a technical expert and be responsible for equipment interoperability across real-time systems, providing technical advice and insight on high-level architecture.
  • Liaise with vendor support, collaborate with other CBC/Radio-Canada teams (IT, Engineering, Production, etc.), and implement solutions to restore services to our partners and audiences.
  • Automate deployment, related scripting and changes through tools like Ansible, Git, etc.
  • Log issues, solutions and procedures to retain corporate memory.
  • Provide technical direction and training to other units in the organization.
  • Ensure that operational mandates are fulfilled and negative impacts on users are minimized.
  • Participate in and provide advice on integrating these systems with the other technical dependencies.
  • Troubleshoot and solve real-time broadcast-critical issues.
  • Liaise with partners and peers to define necessary requirements, while identifying opportunities to optimize facilities and their capacities.
  • Be the go-to resource for the Montreal Infrastructure Support group concerning our real-time infrastructure.

Qualifications:
  • Certificate, degree or diploma in computer science or a related field; a degree or background in television and radio production or engineering technology an asset.
  • At least five years' experience troubleshooting, implementing and optimizing systems and network issues, ideally in a media production and/or presentation environment.
  • Knowledge of media-over-IP technology (SMPTE 2110 and AES67).
  • Knowledge of network or system monitoring tools.
  • Knowledge of VSM, PTP protocol, Arista networks and AMCS.
  • Ability to write scripts on supported platforms.
  • Ability to rapidly come up to speed on new tools, systems and processes.
  • Methodical approach using excellent judgment to design and implement resilient and scalable solutions (you will need to balance competing priorities to meet deadlines and thrive in a high-pressure 24-7 real-time live environment).

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
