WUSA9, TEGNA's flagship TV station and CBS affiliate in Washington, DC, is seeking a Managing Editor to execute on our editorial agenda around our content pillars and brand lens focused on broadcast.
The successful candidate will manage reporters, the assignment desk manager and futures planning editor.
The Managing Editor will partner with the Assistant News Director on making key decisions on story selection, breaking news coverage, and planning for all day parts especially mornings and big event coverage.
This role requires strong news judgment, strong knowledge of the market area, and experience managing journalists and projects in a multi-platform newsroom. The Managing Editor should also have experience making strategic, data-informed decisions. They have scrupulous attention to detail, a cool head under pressure, and excellent communication skills are essential.

Responsibilities:
- Manage reporters and partner with them to break news, find exclusives and execute on stories that fit our brand lens.
- Work with reporters to shape their broadcast copy, develop their reporting skills, and monitor their performance.
- Develop coverage plans for big events including inauguration and elections.
- Oversee the workflow of the Assignment Desk on identifying breaking news, enterprising stories that fit our brand lens and keeping a consistent log of stories that need further development or follow-up coverage.
- Hold desk editors and reporters accountable for daily audience needs and maintaining sources/contacts in the community.
- Oversee workflow of Futures Planning Editor on keeping the newsroom ahead in coverage especially the GUDC team
- Ensure coverage aligns with company standards and show good judgment in handling sensitive topics, seeking advice when needed.
- Assist with scheduling and other administrative responsibilities.
Requirements:
- B.S. in Journalism or similar relevant field
- At least 10 years working as a leader in a broadcast news environment
- Experience directly managing teams and working cross-functionally to achieve newsroom goals
- Skilled writer and editor with demonstrated experience coaching reporters, producers and desk editors
- Effective communicator who can clearly articulate strategy and priorities to your team, your peers and senior leadership
- Strong knowledge of journalistic and ethical standards and practices and the editorial/technical/logistical processes required to assess and elevate multimedia content.
- Demonstrated ability to foster diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace and understands that DEI is an element of offering an accurate report to audiences
- Demonstrated excellence in news judgment and ability to swiftly and accurately lead reporting on all platforms while emphasizing fairness, accuracy, context, transparency, facts and truth.
- Ability to lead, motivate and supervise a team. Requires superior people and mentoring skills, and knowledge of good management practices.
- Previous working experience as Managing Editor or Executive Producer
