Full Remote in US University Press of Colorado seeks an energetic and experienced Senior Acquisitions Editor to acquire scholarly, text, and trade books across our four imprints: University Press of Colorado, University of Alaska Press, Utah State University Press, and University of Wyoming Press. Working closely with the director of the press and with our dedicated and creative staff, the Senior Editor will play a key role in developing existing lists, with primary responsibility for our composition and rhetoric list as well as additional list areas such as folklore, history, and literature. There’s also an opportunity to expand our footprint in polar studies. Founded in 1965, the University Press of Colorado is a nonprofit cooperative publishing enterprise supported by twelve member institutions in four states, publishing 60 books annually across our four editorial imprints. University Press of Colorado is a fully remote employer with employees currently in five states from Alaska to North Carolina. Responsibilities: Acquire and develop 25–30 books per year: solicit and evaluate book proposals and manuscripts, work with series editors, manage peer review process and editorial committee approval, negotiate contracts with authors. Develop and implement list area publishing strategies; develop and expand network of scholars, authors, and reviewers. Ensure that manuscripts are of high quality and well prepared, transmit books into production, collaborate with production staff to set priorities and communicate production and design needs. Supervise the work of a shared editorial assistant. Travel to academic conferences and university campuses. Other duties may also be assigned. Requirements: Bachelor’s degree and at least five years of relevant experience in editorial acquisitions. Proven track record in acquiring scholarly, text, and trade titles. Demonstrated experience setting editorial strategy and building list areas. Knowledge, skills, and abilities: Knowledge of academic research and publishing standards, including the peer review process. Knowledge of contracts and copyright. Demonstrated entrepreneurial skills to identify, develop, and evaluate publishing areas and book concepts. Demonstrated ability to build a network of authors and advisors, with preference given for networks in the list areas. Excellent written communication and conceptual editing skills. Strong analytical, critical thinking, and decision-making skills. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Self-motivation and ability to self-manage in remote situations. Adaptability and flexibility in changing environments. Capacity to synthesize materials and communicate information in a manner easily understood. Experience with managing projects to specifications and to meet expected deadlines. Ability to perform detailed work with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
