Apple TV+ is seeking a Head of Global Licensing who will lead all aspects of licensing content for Apple TV+ - from setting licensing strategy to leading commercial negotiations, ensuring successful content launches and rapidly iterating based on quantitative performance insights. This is a senior position, with high visibility and impact. It mandates a seasoned business leader who can both set a vision and roll up their sleeves to navigate a large and matrixed organization. Successful candidates will demonstrate an extensive track record leading content licensing negotiations for a leading subscription streaming service. This includes possessing detailed knowledge of content valuation and pricing trends for both Film & TV series, as well as a meticulous understanding of commercial negotiating terms that underpin current licensing agreements. Candidates will also be able to evidence a sterling reputation among their peers and strong relationships with senior counterparts across the content licensing space - including all of the major Hollywood studios & indies, as well as global content distributors in major international markets.
Description
- Develop and implement a differentiated content licensing strategy for Apple TV+, taking into account the service's unique market positioning, original content strategy, and audience demographics. Identify and prioritize key content categories & markets to drive subscriber acquisition/engagement KPIs.
- Lead negotiations for high-value content acquisition deals, including exclusive and non-exclusive licenses. Navigate sophisticated rights agreements, ensuring favorable terms and protecting the company's interests. Lead all aspects of renewals and extensions of existing deals.
- Lead the licensing efforts across multiple regions, including North America, Europe, Latin America, and APAC. Understand regional content preferences while optimizing global content offerings and ensuring regulatory compliance.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with major studios, production companies, distributors, and other content providers. Drive strategic partnerships to improve content offerings and secure unique content opportunities that differentiate the platform.
- Collaborate closely with internal teams (e.g., Editorial, Legal, Content Ops, Marketing, PR, and International) to ensure that content offerings align with customer preferences, platform capabilities, and legal frameworks. Work with Content Strategy & Data Science teams to analyze performance and make data-driven decisions.
- Work with Finance to lead all aspects of budgeting and prioritization. Provide regular reporting on licensing KPIs, content performance, and value.
- Stay ahead of industry trends, emerging content formats, and evolving distribution models (e.g., AVOD, FAST, etc.). Identify new opportunities for growth through innovative content partnerships or formats.
- Project manage a cross-functional team of professionals, providing mentorship, support, and encouraging a culture of innovation and excellence. Be a center of knowledge for any ad hoc licensing-related questions that arise.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum of 10 years in content licensing, acquisitions, or distribution, with at least 5 years in a leadership role, specifically in the SVOD space.
- Proven record of optimally negotiating high-value, nuanced content agreements with major content owners, studios, and distributors; both small and large deals (from under $10M to over $1B).
- Deep industry connections and outstanding reputation among peers. Extensive knowledge of market pricing and global trends across TV and movies, in all genres.
- Strong understanding of global licensing models, market dynamics, and regional content preferences. Experience negotiating complex, multi-territory content deals. Knowledge of regulations pertaining to streaming video offerings (e.g., AVMS) a plus.
- Strong ability to think strategically and long-term, balancing immediate content needs with the company's overall vision and growth targets. Deep knowledge of the SVOD landscape with the ability to anticipate market trends and adapt the licensing strategy accordingly.
- Ability to work effectively with senior leadership, legal, finance, data, and marketing teams. Experience collaborating with a diverse, global workforce.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with the ability to clearly articulate sophisticated concepts and strategies to senior leadership & a broad range of internal partners. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to foster strong relationships with key external collaborators.
- Demonstrated leadership and management experience, with the ability to inspire, motivate, and develop high-performing teams.
- BA/BS
Preferred Qualifications
- MBA, JD, or equivalent experience in consulting or finance field.
Pay & Benefits
- At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $191,300 and $352,700, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
