General Function
Scientific Lead is an expert responsible for providing medical and scientific leadership for US functional products on nutraceutical’s business development portfolio and in-market brands. The Nutraceutical Medical and Scientific Lead develops, manages and executes the brand communication based on the scientific evidence to build a trust from the external and internal stakeholders.
Principal Responsibilities Internal Explore and address societal and health issues (especially heat illness and dehydration) in the US. Development of medical and scientific strategy to support the communication of our functional products include clinical data development. Partnership with commercial team and other functions effectively to drive strategy of in-market brands Clinical and scientific expertise to respond to the FDA or other government body Collaborate with Otsuka Group companies in the US among science functions to promote scientific approach in the functional product area. Internal training for sales or commercial teams Promotion material review from the scientific stand point External Identify and build relationship and network with top tier KOLs or healthcare professionals regarding high level strategy in the therapeutic or academic field Continuous engagement with external stakeholders including customers and consumers to educate and deliver the value through educational activities Leading for medical education, publications, trials and other scientific activities when needed Achieves results and brings out the best in people by: Establishing job design and ensuring appropriate staffing to deliver the department’s strategy operating plan and short-term objectives with aligning of company philosophy, culture, mission and vision. Communicating department goals and objectives and cascading them to others, ensuring workload is distributed appropriately to achieve goals and objectives. Maintaining two way dialogues with direct reports on work and results. Interpreting and ensuring Company policies and procedures are understood and consistently followed by others. Collaboratively creating development plans and coaching individuals in achieving them. Working within the people management systems in the Company to develop others (performance management, rewards and selection process); and Creating an energizing work environment that supports the Company’s high performance culture while ensuring an efficient and flexible organization. Demonstrates passion for the business and achieves results. Collaborates with cross-functional departments to achieve goals and objectives through teamwork. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Degree & Experience Requirements: PhD in Science or equivalent required (i.e. Exercise Physiology, Public Health, Food Science, Food Medicine, Sports Nutrition, etc.) 5+ years’ experience in Medical Affairs or similar role Robust and current clinical development experience to build data from scientific standpoint Must have understanding of compliance considerations and demonstrate ability to work compliantly in a field-based role, within the medical organization, as well as across the commercial organization
Job Knowledge & Skills: PhD and significant post-doc research experience with capability to design and implement trials Medical advisor with significant healthcare related business experience ideally with the deep understanding of nutrition, body fluid management, hydration and heat illness Excellent oral and written communication skills Energetically embraces responsibilities, demonstrates ability to achieve goals Has strong initiative, and functions well as part of a cross-functional team Exhibits excellent time management Demonstrated ability to work independently Excellent verbal and written communication skills Experience in a start-up environment preferred Must be pro-active team player, flexible, and ability to work in ambiguous situations Japanese / English bilingual is a plus
Travel Expectations: 50% of domestic travel required to deliver the business objectives
Physical Requirements: General office environment, ability to sit for long periods of time. Ability to move about an office.
Environment: Exposure to disagreeable elements is negligible.
Safety: The incumbent must be able to perform this job safely without endangering the health or safety of self or others.
Supervisory Responsibility: The incumbent has direct supervisory responsibility for one to three employees in future.
Location: San Francisco, CA
Pay Range: $150,000/year - $200,000/year The range shown represents a typical pay range or starting salary for candidates hired to perform the work. Other elements may be used to determine actual salary such as the candidate’s job experience, specific skills, and comparison to internal incumbents currently in role. This information is provided to applicants in accordance with states and local laws. This position is eligible to receive a discretionary annual bonus. Whether any bonus is awarded in any fiscal year is subject to several factors, including your performance and Otsuka America’s performance and is in Otsuka America’s sole discretion. The target amount of any discretionary annual bonus awarded to this position will be 25% of the annual base salary.
