Reporter- Suffolk County Government/Politics

Summary of Position
Newsday is seeking a driven reporter to provide accurate, detailed stories about Suffolk County government and county agencies. The reporter will cultivate diverse sources and help build diverse audiences. The reporter will also work closely with editors to monitor metrics and apply the data to help inform coverage as we serve our loyal subscribers, seek new subscribers and strive to better understand key audiences and topics.
Essential Duties & Functions
• Coverage of the county executive’s office, and meetings of the legislature and its committees.
• Reporter must be able to recognize issues that are good candidates for in-depth coverage, propose enterprise ideas, and work closely and collaboratively with editors and other colleagues during the reporting, writing and editing process.
•Candidates must understand the needs of our digital audiences, the importance of working on multiple platforms, and have honed the skills necessary to respond in real time to breaking news.
Essential Job Knowledge & Skills
• Three to five years of writing and reporting experience.
• Reporting, writing, social media, video/photo and alternative storytelling experience.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and attention to detail required.
• Ability to work on multiple assignments simultaneously and meet aggressive deadlines.
• Ability to work at least one weekend day as part of their regular shift.
• Ability and willingness to work a flexible and varied schedule to include weekends, holidays and extended hours as needed to support the business.
Compensation
• This position is represented by the Printing, Packaging and Production Workers Union of North America (PPPWU), Local 406-c.
• The hourly base rate range for this role is $32.23-$53.38, commensurate with experience.
