The City of San Bernardino is seeking an experienced service focused self-starter to fill (1) one part-time vacancy as a Library Assistant within the Circulation Division of the Library Department. The Library Assistant will pick up and sort materials for delivery; deliver books, supplies, equipment, furnishings, and mail to the Central Library, its three branches, and other City Departments; plan and schedule pick up of donated materials and operate a City vehicle. Normal workdays are Monday - Thursday and early morning availability is preferred.

The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or GED and have at least (2) two years of library experience or other customer service or clerical experience.

A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the City's vehicle insurance policy.
Physical Requirements:
Employees work in a library setting where, the noise level is usually quiet. While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to sit, walk, and stand; talk or hear, both in person and by telephone; use hands repetitively to manipulate, handle, feel, or operate standard office equipment, reach with hands and arms; and lift up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

BENEFITS AND REWARDS:
After 90 days of continuous service with the City, part-time employees are entitled 40 hours of paid sick leave. These hours reset each fiscal year and will not carry over.

- Picks up and sorts materials for delivery; delivers books, supplies, equipment, furnishings, and mail to the Central Library, branches, and other City Departments; plans and schedules pick up of donated materials and operates City vehicle.
- Maintains order of shelves accurately and ensures a neat appearance; sorts and shelves books, periodicals, and a variety of other library materials.
- Issues library cards; charges and discharges books and other library materials at the circulating desk; prepares materials for circulation; collects and records fines.
- Assists the general public in directional reference questions; searches throughout collections to locate library materials requested by patrons; assists the public with computers in the computer lab; participates in outreach programs and internal programs.
- Assists at the circulation desk checking in and out materials, issuing new and replacement library cards, maintaining patron addresses and answering questions; explains routine library policies and procedures to patrons; processes overdue library materials and phone renewals; receives and receipts monies for use of library materials.
- Performs opening and closing duties for the library; checks drop boxes, processes newspapers, turns on fans, lights, and computers; ensures office equipment is stocked and in working order, empties donation bin.
- Delivers and retrieves materials from other branches or city locations; packs, wraps, weighs and stamps packages.
- Provides maintenance, organization, and cleaning for the library computers, counters, and workspaces; ensures materials are shelved and the library is clean.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Coordinate instructional classes and regular Family Literacy programs utilizing Makerspace supplies.
- Assist in coordinating Makerspace open hours, including instruction to patrons of all ages on equipment use.
- Train and oversee Makerspace volunteers on a variety of machinery and software.
- Conduct learner intake; working one-on-one with learners; and participate in outreach activities and programs to promote the library and literacy services.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
