About Us:

The Stanford Center for Asian Health Research and Education (CARE), under the Division for Research and Education in Academic Medicine (DREAM), is the only medical center among top US universities devoted to advancing the health of Asians worldwide through increasing knowledge, empowering education, and positively impacting clinical care.

CARE is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Journal Editor to provide administrative and editorial management of the Journal of Asian Health (JAH). In this new role, the Journal Editor will work closely with the Journal’s Editor in Chief to provide administrative and editorial management, as well as to shape the growth of the publication to become the world’s leading journal in Asian health.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for advancing research and education to advance health equity, compelling experience reviewing and editing complex and diverse pieces of healthcare literature, and exceptional strengths in both critical thinking and developing relationships with stakeholders. Experience with building an early-stage journal is preferred but not required.

This position will report to the CARE Associate Director of Operations and will be hybrid based out of Stanford Research Park, with the potential for a remote position.

Duties include:

  • Working with the Editor in Chief to oversee the Journal publication process from receiving submission through publication.
  • Managing, on a daily basis, the editorial process, from commissioning of pieces, to editing, design, production, and publication, ensuring all deadlines are met.
  • Coordinating management of the publication’s electronic systems and platforms and facilitating the publication process with authors, editors, vendors, and contractors.
  • Establishing and maintaining communication with internal clients and external media outlets to facilitate promotion and review content for dissemination both in print and digitally.
  • Developing a sustainable growth strategy to expand the Journal of Asian Health’s reach and impact, including marketing and outreach strategies and recruitment of faculty reviewers.
  • Track and assist with reporting CARE-affiliated research and initiatives.
  • May occasionally assist with copyediting grant submissions for key CARE faculty and research topics.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors’ degree in a related field.
  • Prior work experience for an academic journal.
  • Familiarity with publishing systems.
  • Familiarity with medical literature, scientific methods and copyediting.
  • Ability to work effectively with senior organizational leaders, scientists and faculty.
  • Ability to apply critical thinking to complex challenges to identify and resolve key editorial and publication issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply discretion and judgment in evaluating implications of publication and information release to internal and external audiences.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

  • Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant work experience or combination of education and relevant experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • Demonstrated understanding of the principles, terminology, procedures, and best practices of communications, public relations, and editorial content.
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate and develop sources for features, news release, bulletin, etc.
  • Experience conducting source-gathering, interview administration, and performing research for appropriate contents and media.
  • Considerable experience editing manuscripts for form, content, style, and organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and advise SME on effective writing, publication, and information-giving techniques to reach target audiences.
  • Demonstrated experience of job-required software applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform detailed work with high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, and grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
  • Occasionally grasp forcefully, writing by hand.
  • Rarely sort/file paperwork; lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Occasional work on evenings and weekends.

The expected pay range for this position is $44.13 to $51.41 per hour.
