Conservation Council of Western Australia (CCWA) is the state’s foremost not-for-profit, non-government conservation and environment organisation. CCWA is the voice for conservation and works with the government, media, industry, community groups, and political parties to promote a more sustainable WA and to protect our natural environment.
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are seeking an experienced media advisor to join our dedicated team. This role is offered on a permanent full-time basis with an initial 4-month probation period. You will be responsible for ensuring CCWA continues to maintain, and builds upon, a professional and wide-reaching media presence that advances the objectives of our campaigns and other programs. You will work closely with program managers, the campaign director, executive director and digital communications coordinator to place stories, respond to arising media opportunities, monitor and report on our media presence, develop media strategies and maximise positive coverage of our messages. This is a central role at CCWA, and you will be a highly active, connected, and energetic member of the team.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
Providing proactive and strategic media advice to the Executive Director, including advising on when and how CCWA should respond to various arising media opportunities.
Preparing media statements and key messages and assisting CCWA media spokespeople with interview preparation.
Alongside the Campaign Director, meeting with CCWA programs to map out upcoming media and communications and provide strategic communications advice; and seeking input from program managers to prepare content and background information for media.
Providing media releases, other statements and short copy as required to the Digital Content Coordinator for publication, and regularly discussing media strategy and approaches with Digital Content Coordinator to support their strategic planning.
Managing incoming media enquiries on the CCWA media phone and email, discussing enquiries with the Executive Director and providing strategic advice.
Liaising with journalists and producers to place stories and provide comments and feedback.
Drafting and pitching opinion pieces and publishing blog posts to deepen understanding and strengthen CCWA’s position on complex issues.
Media monitoring and reporting.
Providing summaries of media outcomes for various CCWA reports.
Assisting with development and drafting of various CCWA public positions as required.
Copy editing and overseeing scheduling of supporter emails prepared by campaign teams and membership officer as required.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with significant professional experience in writing copy and key messages.
Proven ability to liaise with journalists and producers to place compelling and timely stories and comments.
Exceptional skill in developing media strategy and approaches.
Ability to work to tight deadlines and juggle priorities effectively.
Exceptional teamwork and emotional intelligence.
Dedication to the protection of nature and action on climate.
Enthusiastic and self-motivated.
ESSENTIAL
Minimum 3 years of experience in a similar role.
National Police Clearance Certificate.
Valid and current Western Australian Drivers Licence.
A commitment to the protection of nature and action on climate.
DESIRABLE
Experience in the environment sector and knowledge of nature conservation, climate change and environmental advocacy issues, particularly in Western Australia.
Established networks in WA and National media.
Relevant tertiary qualifications.
KEY DETAILS
Hours: Full-Time (37.5 hours per week, 1.0 FTE). Flexible work arrangements will be considered.
Location: Based in West Perth, Western Australia.
Salary: Social and Community Services (WA) Interim Award ($104,000 - $115,400) + superannuation.
