The Overtown Youth Center (OYC Miami) seeks to hire a Music Instructor that specializes in teaching students across grade levels (K-12) practical methods and theory of general music, singing, as well as playing musical instruments. Experience arranging compositions and with digital recording equipment/software is also desired. They should also prepare students for 2-3 showcases during the program year.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To be successful as a music instructor, you should create an enjoyable learning environment to inspire young minds and help them grow in appreciation of music
  • Must provide a music curriculum
  • The music instructor will be skilled in playing musical instruments, planning performances for student participation, and creating after school music activities
  • Understand and keep track of all projects that are underway at any given time
  • Assist in coordinating / developing curriculum outline and schedule of projected activities and projects for various levels (Elementary, Middle, and High School) to be implemented in school year and/or summer programming
  • Work with Development and Program Teams to promote exhibits, showcases, and/or performances with specific goals and outcomes for these events
  • Ability to utilize digital recording equipment/software to record and edit music recordings
  • Ability to manage classroom behavior and engage students at all levels
  • Assist in supervising groups of students on field trips, bus routes and other activities held at the OYC
  • Use interpersonal skills to support students in various settings
  • Mentor/counsel students and encourage social inclusion
  • Attend meetings conferences and training sessions
  • Provide support and advice to young people experiencing difficulties, such as family problems, peer pressure, etc.
  • Work closely with volunteers and partners as assigned
  • Be a good role model for students
  • Maintain classroom equipment/storage room in an orderly fashion
  • Ensure that all equipment/supplies are working properly and in good standing
  • Inspire and motivate students to extend themselves to in the area of music

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in music preferred
  • Minimum of 1-3 years' teaching experience with youth
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to pass a Level II Background Screening
  • Ability to pass a drug test
  • Reliable transportation
