The Health Promotion Program within NE Region of Public Health Division works with internal and external partners to support population health equity activities. These activities are intended to positively impact the health of communities within the Region. In other words, the Program develops, implements, evaluates, and generally supports health-related activities to support local needs of groups of people - in terms of how they live, grow, and age.
Key internal partners include other programs and bureaus within the Region and key external partners include tribal and county health councils, as well as not-for-profits and managed care organizations that support the work of councils and local communities.
Why does the job exist?
This position is responsible for supporting the NE Region and its communities within the greater Las Vegas area to address health equity issues such as development of health policies and implementation of special projects and/or grants that address health priorities in communities. This may involve direct client health education, group education, community coalition building, group facilitation, contract, and grant management and/or generally supporting community health councils.
How does it get done?
Health Promotion work is concentrated on population health, looking at changes impacting groups of people in communities where they live, work, play and age. Health Promotion strengthens collaborative efforts at the local level to provide health councils and community partners with data, technical assistance and other resources at the request of local communities. This position is responsible to assure coordination of local community health improvement activities with DOH by assessing community readiness; raising awareness on identified health issues; including the provision of and interpretation of data; identifying appropriate local partners; including partners in planning and implementation of state initiatives; and facilitating communication between local, region and state entities.
Who are the customers?
The Las Vegas Health Promotion Specialist is responsible to serve communities in Mora, Guadalupe, and San Miguel Counties, and potentially serve other counties in the surrounding area on an ad hoc basis.
Ideal Candidate
he ideal candidate is familiar with internal and external partners within the NE Region, and is a member of at least one local community, such as a health council. The ideal candidate should have knowledge and experience with:
* Knowledge and experience with community assessment and planning. *
* Experience working with tribal communities.
* Experience with providing trainings to individuals and community groups.
* Experience with community coalition building and facilitation.
* Experience with using or teaching evidence-based interventions to address health problems or influence policies in a community setting.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in Public Health or Education and two (2) years of experience in a health related field. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Successful completion of required trainings of the NE Region Public Health Division, particularly those that related to obtaining a Defensive Driving Certificate and understanding the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting; exposure to visual/video display terminals (VDTs), personal computers and phone usage is extensive. The position requires the ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds; extensive travel may be required throughout the NE Region (ie. potentially within tribal communities of Eight Northern Pueblos, Jicarilla Apache, and counties of Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Rio Arriba, Taos, San Miguel, Guadalupe, Mora, Union, Harding, and Colfax).
