About Us:
The Utah Lake Authority (ULA) is responsible for managing and enhancing the ecological health, recreational opportunities, and economic development of Utah Lake and its surrounding communities. Our mission is to lead collaborative efforts with federal, state, and local agencies to improve the long-term viability and environmental sustainability of Utah Lake.
We are seeking a Development Director to oversee all grant-related activities, fundraising, and procurement processes for the agency. This role will play a critical part in supporting various ULA initiatives, ensuring that the agency efficiently and effectively manages its financial resources while adhering to all grant and procurement regulations.
Position Summary:
The Development Director is responsible for overseeing grant work, sponsorship, individual donations, and monetization activities of the Utah Lake Authority. This role involves serving as lead grant writer, supervising contracted grant writers in applying for funding, seeking and securing sponsorships, donations, and individual contributions, procurement processes, and ensuring compliance with contracts and federal, state, and local regulations for grant administration. Additionally, this position may at times manage the financial aspects of various projects, ensuring proper allocation of resources and adherence to approved budgets.
Key Responsibilities: Grants Administration:
• Manage the full lifecycle of grant processes including identifying opportunities, preparing applications, overseeing awards, and ensuring compliance with funder conditions.
• Lead the development and submission of grant proposals, ensuring alignment with the goals outlined in the Utah Lake Management Plan.
• Prepare and maintain grant budgets, track expenditures, and ensure timely reporting and compliance with all grant regulations.
• Work with ULA staff to integrate grants into the overall ULA budget and financial management system.
• Supervise grant writing contractors in preparing grant applications, receipt of funds, and administration of the funding.
Fundraising:
• Secure sponsorships for ULA events, conservation efforts, and programs.
• Seek and facilitate monetary and in-kind donations to support the policies and objectives of ULA.
• Coordinate the marketization of ULA and Utah Lake via sales of promotional items.
• Prepare detailed financial reports and present findings to ULA’s leadership team and external stakeholders.
Procurement:
• Manage ULA’s procurement process, ensuring compliance with internal policies, and state and federal guidelines for purchasing.
• Review and approve purchase orders, contracts, and service agreements to ensure they meet legal and policy requirements.
• Oversee vendor selection, negotiate contracts, and ensure timely payments for goods and services.
• Supervise purchasing of materials for ULA office, events, programs, and projects.
Project Management:
• Assist in planning and implementing financial aspects of ULA’s restoration and enhancement projects at Utah Lake.
• Collaborate with ULA project managers to ensure alignment between project budgets and actual expenditures.
• Track progress of projects, ensure proper allocation of resources, and report on the financial status of ongoing projects.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field. A Master’s degree or CPA designation is preferred.
Experience: • 3+ years of successful grant writing with both charitable foundations and federal grant makers.
• 3+ years with state or federal grant processes, including applying, reporting, and compliance.
• 1+ years in financial management and procurement, preferably in a public or nonprofit sector role.
• 1+ years of successful fundraising (individual donors, sponsorships, and related).
• Experience with project management, including budget tracking and financial reporting for large-scale projects.
Desirable Additional Experience: • Monetization and/or online retail store and sales development.
• Work in environmental issues, natural resources, or sustainability.
• Successful track record of grant writing with Bureau of Reclamation, EPA, DOE, DOI, DOD, USDA, NRCS, and/or NSF.
• Successful experience with one or more major philanthropic donors serving Utah (e.g., the Eccles Foundation).
Skills: • Exceptional written communication skills.
• Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
• Strong knowledge of grant management and financial reporting systems.
• Familiarity with state and federal procurement regulations and guidelines.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across teams and external stakeholders.
• Proficiency in financial software, spreadsheets, and accounting platforms.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
