DATE OF APPOINTMENT: August 15, 2025 (Classes begin August 20, 2025)

JOB DESCRIPTION: Primary assignment is conducting and managing the WVU Symphony Orchestra and developing a comprehensive and innovative orchestra program. Additional assignments include teaching courses in undergraduate and graduate conducting and orchestra literature. Coordination of recruitment activities, including an annual honors orchestra weekend, and participation in faculty governance is expected. The candidate will be required to establish and maintain a national and/or international professional profile through conducting appearances, publications, presentations, and other research/creative activity. Service to the university, community, and profession including active involvement in professional organizations is expected. Additional responsibilities will be assigned according to the needs of the School of Music and abilities of the candidate.

SALARY AND RANK: Assistant Professor. Full-time, nine-month, tenure-track appointment. Competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The School of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, the Music Therapy Program is accredited by the American Music Therapy Association, and the Music Education Program is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation and the West Virginia Department of Education.

The College of Creative Arts and Media has an enrollment of over 2,000 students and consists of four professionally accredited and nationally recognized Schools of Art & Design, Media & Communications, Music, and Theatre & Dance. Each School offers a range of undergraduate and graduate degrees addressing such fields as the creative and performing arts, advertising and communications, arts education and scholarship, design disciplines, journalism, marketing and public relations, museum studies, the recording industry, theatre technology, and the intersection of art and health.

Qualifications

Required

  • Master of Music degree
  • A record of excellence in orchestral conducting, ensemble program management, and recruitment activities
  • Established professional activity with potential for national recognition as a conductor and pedagogue
  • Demonstrated success in building and promoting strong orchestral programs with experience mentoring young artists
  • Ability to recruit and retain students
  • Exemplary communication skills and a commitment to enhancing the intellectual and cultural life of the University

Preferred

  • Doctoral degree in music
  • Demonstrated success recruiting and retaining students at the secondary and/or university level
  • A minimum of 2 years teaching experience at the college/university level or equivalent experience
