The Salvation Army, an Internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has a job opening for a Camp Music Conservatory Piano Studio Coordinator for the Arkansas and Oklahoma Conservatory of Music and Arts, located in Welling, OK.
Job Summary
This is a summer position at Camp Heart O' Hills. This position summary should not be interpreted as all inclusive. It is intended to identify the essential functions and requirements of this position. The incumbents may be requested to perform job-related responsibilities and tasks other than those stated in this position summary.
The Piano Studio Coordinator position oversees the piano studio by formulating and implementing a well-balanced curriculum that includes traditional and contemporary elements. The Piano Studio Coordinator will also serve as the accompanist for choir and some solos to be performed by students and staff. This position is tasked with promoting a safe and stimulating learning environment for their students that facilitates personal, artistic, and spiritual growth. The piano studio meets as a class, with each student being assigned a keyboard and headphones. The curriculum should include traditional elements such a scales, fingerings, part reading, etc. It should also include chords, lead sheets, song accompaniment, etc. The goal of the piano studio is to train quality church pianists who can accompany congregational singing, accompany ensembles such as adult and youth choirs, and play with a contemporary praise and worship ensemble. Students should be equipped to pursue further education and eventually enter into a collegiate program if they so choose.
In addition to teaching the piano studio class, the Piano Studio Coordinator may be required to teach private lessons. These lessons should focus on technique and repertoire. Private lessons should also be used to prepare a solo, as all students are required to perform a solo on a recital night. Other responsibilities may include teaching a music theory class, creating lesson plans, scheduling private lessons, grading assignments, monitoring student's progress, preparing students for recitals and performances, informing the Conservatory Director of any needed supplies or music, ensuring that the Conservatory equipment and instruments are well cared for, moving and setting up equipment as needed for rehearsals and performances, playing with staff ensembles, planning and implementing at least one night program, etc. All staff, including Piano Studio Coordinators, are also on duty during staff meetings, Bible Studies, worship services, night programs, and Evensong.
The Piano Studio Coordinator should maintain proper behavior in their students, follow appropriate disciplinary guidelines when necessary, highlight positive behavior in students, promote the participation and safety of students at all times, provide guidance and role-modeling to students both personally and artistically, ensure punctuality and responsibility of students, ensure compliance with camp rules and regulations, assist with program activities as assigned by the Conservatory Director, maintain an up-to-date incident report log, report any issues or concerns to the Conservatory Director, ensure that proper coverage is maintained over students at all times, keep personal living quarters neat, clean and ready for inspection, be available to participate and assist with camp programs and activities as directed by the Conservatory Director, etc.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of the principles and practices of child and youth behavior and development; Ability to ensure the safety of students and other staff; Ability to plan, develop, facilitate, and supervise children and youth programs and activities; Ability to build and maintain effective mentor relationships with children and youth; Ability to communicate effectively with campers and camp staff; Ability to plan, develop, and implement effective childhood and youth programs and activities; Knowledge of the principles and practices of music education; Ability to teach classes in a group setting; Ability to teach students music theory; Ability to teach and demonstrate your artistic discipline at a high level.
Education and Experience
One year of experience teaching and college credits in piano, with the ability to play and teach lessons in a classroom setting involving more than one student preferred, OR any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Licenses and Certifications
CPR and First Aid Certified. Training will be provided at camp.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Ability to communicate and work with groups participating and provide necessary instruction to students and staff; Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques; Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity; Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid; Must be able to assist students in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of students;
Ability to meet attendance requirements; Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language.
Some physical requirements could include climbing, standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate activities are required. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Have a willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering a program in the facility available. The conservatory schedule operates 7 days a week, and all staff members are expected to be available for duty at all times unless otherwise noted by the Conservatory Director. Operate with daily exposure to the sun and heat and varying environmental conditions.

Camp Staff Orientation will be held 06/04/2024 - 06/09/2024 and participation is required.
The 2024 summer camp program will be held 6/10/2024 - 07/14/2024. If you are unable to work the entire program session, you must let us know on your application.
