Maryland Legal Aid (MLA) advocates with and for Marylanders experiencing poverty to achieve equity and social justice through free civil legal services, community collaboration, and systemic change. MLA is a statewide, nonprofit law firm, and the largest provider of free civil legal services in the state serving people in all of Maryland’s 23 jurisdictions and Baltimore City. The organization meets clients where they live through community-based clinics, outreach and education, and in conversation with community members. MLA’s dedicated team handles cases addressing the most fundamental needs of clients, including family, housing, income support, healthcare, employment, and consumer law. MLA also represents children in CINA (Child in Need of Assistance) proceedings and other vulnerable populations, including homeowners facing foreclosure, migrant and seasonal farm workers, people in guardianship proceedings, residents in nursing home and assisted living settings, and re-entering citizens. MLA seeks to resolve their clients’ most fundamental legal problems, bringing greater stability and possibilities to their lives. The Opportunity Maryland Legal Aid seeks a bold and experienced Chief Development and Communications Officer with a demonstrated track record of fundraising success to work closely with the Executive Director and leadership team in supporting and advancing the strategic vision and goals of the organization. This role will be responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive strategies that enhance the organization’s profile and visibility, supporting its fundraising efforts, and communicating its impact to a diverse range of stakeholders. The Chief Development and Communications Officer (CDCO) will play a vital role in promoting Maryland Legal Aid’s stories in a compelling and impactful way to reach a range of external audiences, including media, funders, elected officials, and other key stakeholders. The CDCO is charged with increasing and diversifying financial support from public funders (federal/state/local), foundations, and private donors, ensuring MLA has ample resources to reach its strategic vision and advance its mission. Key Responsibilities: Strategic Leadership:

Develop and implement integrated strategic communications and development plans that effectively support the organization’s goals and increase its impact. Development and Grants:

Lead and expand the fundraising program to secure resources from individuals, foundations, corporations, and government sources. Communication and Marketing:

Lead the communication team to build relationships with media and key stakeholders and to provide compelling, impactful content and materials. Team Leadership and Management:

Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing team that values excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Evaluation and Reporting:

Develop and implement evaluation frameworks to measure the effectiveness of communication strategies and development activities. Candidate Profile The Chief Development and Communications Officer will be a bold, dynamic, and experienced fundraising leader with a measurable track record of success in institutional, individual, and corporate giving. The ideal candidate understands and appreciates the interconnectedness of marketing, communications, and fundraising. Compensation & Benefits Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. The salary range for this role is $170,000 - $195,000 with a generous benefits package.
