LIBRARY/MEDIA ASSISTANT I

THE POSITION

Under the general supervision of the Library/Media Technician (Clerk), serves as a support to library services in general; expected to perform library/media related duties as needed.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Positions in this class receive direct assignment, supervision and training from certified instructional personnel and general orientation and training from the principal through District programs. Perform a variety of library and media functions in support of an elementary or middle school library. Circulation, maintenance and distribution of books, instructional materials, and audio visual materials; assist students and teachers with research using library/media resources. The duties listed below are typical for positions in the class collectively but no one position will necessarily include all these duties.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The duties listed are typical, but not exclusive:
•Under the general supervision of the Library/Media Technician (Clerk), assist in the overall operation of the school library media center.
•Assist in preparing reports, bibliographies, library publications (memos, notices, etc.)
•Assist students and teachers with the location of materials and guide students in the proper use of the library media center and its resources.
•Assist individuals and groups of students in the use of basic reference sources in finding and selecting materials.
•Operate a computer to obtain access to the Internet for reference information.
•Assist in the supervision of students in the library by consistently enforcing library rules, policies and procedures in a positive manner.
•Observe behavior patterns and develop appropriate techniques to reinforce acceptable behavior.
•Assist in the development of a variety of library and instructional materials.
•Check library materials in and out to students and staff.
•Design and prepare appropriate library displays, decorations, and bulletin boards; maintain a clean and orderly library environment.
•Perform a variety of regular clerical duties, such as filing, typing or duplicating materials.
•Mend, repair and maintain damaged library materials; prepare and record materials to be rebound, repaired or discarded.
•Operate a variety of instructional media, office machines and equipment.
•Maintain discipline in the absence of the teacher.
•Maintain records of materials and equipment as directed.
•Participate in District inservice programs.
•Assist with processing and circulation of textbooks.

Provides general support as follows:
•Operate the circulation desk.
•Create overdue notices.
•Repair books and periodicals.
•Maintain room environment, including bulletin boards, signs and displays.
•Shelve books.
•Assist Library Clerk/Technician in periodic inventory of books and equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE

Knowledge of:
•Library organization, practices, terminology and procedures.
•General concepts of child growth and development and child behavior characteristics.
•Techniques used in controlling and motivating students.
•Basic operation of a computer, including email, Microsoft Office, data entry and retrieval, and ability to troubleshoot common minor computer and printer problems.
•Library reference materials and sources.
•Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
•Correct English usage, punctuation, spelling and grammar.
•Routine record keeping.

Ability to:
•Assume responsibility for supervising students.
•Learn and utilize basic methods and procedures to be followed in a library/media center setting.
•Perform routine clerical work and basic math calculations.
•Demonstrate an understanding, patient, warm and receptive attitude toward children.
•Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
•Maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, parents and the general public.
•Maintain strict confidentiality of student information and school business.
•Shelve library materials and organize textbook materials.
•Assist students and staff in the selection of library materials.
•Process a variety of library and textbook materials.
•Use standard and computerized search systems, hardware, and software.
•Exercise independent judgment.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
•Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade; some paid or volunteer clerical experience or work with children in an educational or child care setting is desirable; or any combination of training and experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities.
•Familiarity with basic Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
•Participate in training in library operations, procedures, and assisting students in research.

REQUIREMENTS
•Pass the District's adopted Proficiency Examination with a satisfactory score.
•Must be proficient in English.

•Mature emotional stability, interest in and understanding of students, good health; flexibility and patience.
•Understanding and sympathy with objectives of public education.
•Dependable and reliable in handling tasks and information of a confidential nature.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Environment:
•Library environment, subject to constant interruptions and noise.
•Workstation open to public.

Physical Abilities:
•Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate computer and office equipment.
•Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
•Walking to various locations within the school or related space.
•Kneeling and bending.
•Reaching horizontally and overhead to retrieve, maintain and store supplies, files and records.
•Lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
•Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the phone.

WORK YEAR: 192 Days

SALARY: Range 20

Required testing: Library Media Assistant. Testing by invitation only; please monitor your email. If you have taken this test and passed; you do not need to retest.
