As a leader on the University Marketing and Communications team (UMAC), this role leads and mentors a team that manages and produces all types of video projects and still photography across a variety of campaigns and communications efforts — from day-to-day news and storytelling to strategic marketing videos. This role will be responsible for providing creative direction to elevate UT Austin in support of the University’s strategic priorities. Our ideal candidate is a creative, collaborative, forward-thinking visual storyteller who can produce, edit, manage, and oversee the full range of technical requirements for multimedia pieces from initial conception to final deliverable.

Responsibilities

  • Video Production: Directs video productions and serves frequently as the lead videographer and editor on projects ranging from single camera to multi-camera field and studio productions. This includes interacting with and guiding clients, subjects/talent and others through the production process. Operates and/or directs the operation of professional cameras, audio, lighting and related equipment to effectively create a variety of video types. Exercises creative decision-making while editing into a completed technically and aesthetically effective presentation. Works with Brand Manager and creative team to ensure brand consistency. Ensures completed videos are uploaded to the appropriate place, made available for distribution and archiving, and meet industry standards for accessibility. Collaborates with UMAC leaders to oversee production of the University’s national spot that airs on televised broadcasts of Longhorn Athletics. Supports other high-priority University video projects as directed by leadership.
  • Development and Planning: Works with UMAC staff to identify creative, high-impact projects that encourage audience engagement, leverage social media, and capture and communicate strategic messages. Creates proposals, outlines and/or scripts and storyboards for clarity of purpose, consideration of audience, and appropriate creative and technical approach for evaluation by supervisor. Manages and ensures an engaging presence on UT’s institutional sites on YouTube, Vimeo and other video hosting sites. Estimates production requirements (including equipment and crew), provides budget estimates, and evaluates copyright clearance and release requirements. In advance of video productions, works with assigned project managers to coordinate production crew, production schedule, locations, and equipment. Works closely with the assigned project manager through all phases of each project to obtain client input, solve problems, and keep projects on schedule.
  • Team Management: Manages, trains, evaluates, recruits, and mentors a team of professional videographers, photographers, and editors. Oversees work product to ensure it meets quality standards, client expectations, and deadlines. Helps to advance the operation and scope of the multimedia unit while balancing the unit’s workload and deliverable calendar. May supervise freelance contractors and student employees. Regularly meets with UMAC staff and other marketing and communications teams across campus to explore ideas for video projects and serves as a resource for best practices with communicators outside of UMAC based in academic and administrative units across campus. Provides weekly project updates to supervisor.
  • Operations: Ensures proper upkeep of, maintains inventory of, and recommends necessary upgrades to production equipment. Ensures campus B-roll and video library is refreshed periodically and made available for distribution.
