Job Description
The Contemporary American Theater Festival at Shepherd University is welcoming applications for CATF's 2025 House Management Interns. CATF, a summer festival and leading producer of contemporary plays, is dedicated to telling diverse stories and developing new American theater. The festival premieres or produces multiple plays each season. CATF is committed to supporting the unique needs of new work while fostering an environment of fun and company community. Located 90 minutes from DC, CATF makes its home in one of America's coolest small towns, Shepherdstown, WV.
House Managers work with other members of the Audience Services Team and Leadership to provide radical hospitality to audience members.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Conducting all tasks with the safety of the audience in mind
- Assisting the Box Office team by taking ticketing phone calls
- Scheduling volunteer ushers and making sure that there are a proper number of ushers for each performance
- Maintaining up-to-date usher contact information
- Sending reminder emails to ushers
- Training ushers to ensure that they are familiar and confident with Front of House procedures, venue layouts, emergency procedures, technology, and other pertinent information
- Working with other members of the Audience Services Team to make sure accessible services and technology are working and distributed as needed
- Providing accessible services (such as closed captioning)
- Working with the Box Office to manage the wait list
- Ensuring the proper doors are unlocked, the lobby and theater spaces are clean, there are enough programs for the performance, encourage audience members to recycle their programs, proper signage is displayed, and fire code regulations are followed
- Communicating with the Stage Management Team regarding safety procedures, opening the theater, starting the show, late seating, intermission start and end times, and other information
- Looking after the audience exit
- Scanning tickets
- Collecting an accurate audience count
- Completing, filing, and distributing a House Managers report for each performance to the appropriate parties
Being a member of the Audience Services Team requires a collaborative working mindset, an enthusiasm for working with and assisting the public, interpersonal communication skills, attention to detail, and feeling comfortable working with technology.

Internships are designed for individuals who are 18 years or older.
Depending on the department, internship positions begin between mid-May and late June and go through the beginning of August. House Manager Intern contracts begin in late June.
All staff and interns are provided free air-conditioned housing within walking distance of air-conditioned theaters and workspaces, and free use of the university's gym, pool, and laundry facilities.
