Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This is a temporary or an on-call position. Provides professional support. Responsibilities may include general business, science, medical, agricultural or other professional support functions. Term: Temps can work two (2) nine (9) month terms with a week break in service in between and at the end of the second term terminate for three (3) months or switch to an on-call. On-Call allowed to work 1039 hours in any twelve (12) month period.

Unit Position Summary

WKAR is looking for an on-call General Assignment Reporter who is eager to produce compelling, in-depth stories that connect with our listeners. This is a dynamic role for a motivated journalist who thrives on the challenge of tackling quick-turn spot news, producing long-form features, and uncovering the stories that matter most to our audience. If you're someone who can simplify complex topics, connect with diverse communities, and bring energy to everything you create, we want you on our team.

This temporary position offers a hybrid work schedule. While core hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., flexibility is required for covering news events and special broadcasts. Occasional early mornings, evenings, or weekends may be required.

Content Creation and Reporting (90%):

  • Cover a range of topics including breaking news, community events, and issues around the environment, economy, and education.
  • Research, pitch, and produce engaging stories for both short- and long-form formats on radio and digital platforms.
  • Conduct field and phone interviews, ensuring diverse perspectives and voices are included.
  • Write clear, compelling scripts for on-air broadcasts, meeting tight deadlines.
  • Collaborate with the news editor to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and adherence to NPR standards.
  • Attend community events and press conferences, and report live from the field when necessary to provide context for ongoing events.


On-Air Hosting and Support (10%):

  • Serve as a fill-in host for All Things Considered and Morning Edition as needed.
  • Support team members by filling in as a copy editor when required.


Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 1-3 years of journalism experience, with excellent reporting, writing, and interviewing skills.
  • Excellent reporting, writing, and interviewing skills.
  • Proficiency in digital production tools (e.g., Adobe Audition or similar).
  • Strong communication skills and a deep commitment to journalistic integrity.
  • Familiarity with digital and social media platforms.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative, while also being open to feedback and collaboration.
