THE TEAM The primary objective of the Communications & Community Relations Division team is to cultivate and bolster a positive perception of the Port. This involves fostering awareness and understanding of Port operations across diverse audiences, including the international maritime industry, port complex stakeholders, local and regional communities, as well as Port employees. The team is dedicated to delivering strategic communication services, refining messaging, managing media relations, elevating brand awareness, and implementing community and education programs. Their responsibilities extend to addressing both anticipated and unforeseen communications challenges and opportunities. THE ROLE The Communications Manager of Content is responsible for developing and managing the day-to-day operations of the Port’s public relations, media, branding, social media, marketing, video, and digital media efforts. This includes overseeing content-driven projects such as print media, broadcast shows, public relations, messaging, media interviews, pitching, crisis communications, marketing, advertising, branding, printing, photography, and publication layouts. This role handles sensitive and confidential information related to organizational strategies and high-level media issues. The Manager of Content will manage and coordinate with staff in the implementation of public relations, content, media communications, and marketing strategies. The role also focuses on generating positive media coverage and ensuring messaging consistency across divisions and projects. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES HOW YOU GET TO CONTRIBUTE: Assist the Director of Communications and Assistant Director in the development and implementation of the Port’s story through the use of public relations and communications strategies concerning all of the Port of Long Beach’s projects and issues including but not limited to: infrastructure projects, trade, environmental policies, grant awards, government relations and advocacy, community engagement and education, crisis communications, the strategic plan and other communications goals. Keep the Director and Assistant Director informed about industry trends, technological advancements, and best practices in content creation and communication. Be a champion of the POLB Brand; inspiring and influencing brand communications across all platforms (social, digital, print, presentations, talking points, and more). Offer strategic analysis, marketing implications, and recommendations through insights gained via surveys, research, data, trends, partnerships, previous campaigns, etc. Collaborate with internal and external partners to create content and initiatives that benefit all parties. Establish recaps and optimization plans during and post campaigns/messaging and communicate findings to the larger team. Assist in developing a strategy for content distribution across various channels, including social media, the Port’s website, newsletters, and third-party platforms. Find opportunities to keep the Port of Long Beach at the top of mind in the Port industry, tenants, and in the political realm to infuse those insights into our marketing and communications strategies. Plan media trips and deskside briefings at national media outlets to promote Port operations and other advocacy needs. Maintain a relationship with local, national, and international media outlets to measure brand health and engagement in a changing media landscape; including creative and active pitching to media outlets. Advise Port Communications staff on high-profile media issues, messaging and additional marketing opportunities. Ensure the editing, quality, and accuracy of all content produced, including printed materials, videos, web content, and graphics; and the proper implementation of brand guidelines. REQUIREMENTS TO FILE EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE: A bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations, public affairs, English, marketing, or a related discipline. Additional experience may be substituted for the required college degree on a year-for-year basis to the extent that the experience has prepared the individual to perform the duties of the classification. A minimum of 5 years of managing a team of relevant professional experience in communications, public relations, or a related field. Experience developing and maintaining relationships with key media outlets and pitching stories and content ideas that align with the organization’s goals. Knowledge of crisis communication strategies and the ability to respond effectively to emergencies and sensitive issues. TECHNICAL SKILLS NEEDED: Proficiency in using various digital tools and software related to content creation, presentations, marketing, social media, and media relations. Should have an understanding of data analytics and metrics to evaluate content performance, and make data-informed decisions, including social media metrics, advertising market shares, surveys to tailor content to the target audiences and other media metrics not listed. DESIRABLE: Advanced degree preferred. Crisis Communications Training preferred. Media outlet experience in a fast-paced environment is highly desirable. You will need strong negotiation skills, political savvy, excellent client/customer relation skills, and exceptional public speaking/presentation skills to thrive. THE BENEFITS: The Port of Long Beach has established an annual salary range of $141,401 - $186,849 (placement depends on qualifications An attractive package of executive-level benefits is included with the opportunity to work in one of the most diverse and dynamic areas of the United States: Auto Allowance – $550.00 per month Executive Leave – 40 hours per year. Retirement – CalPERS 2% @ 62, coordinated with social security. Current member contribution is 8.00% for CalPERS, and 6.2% for social security, paid by the employee. Vacation can be used after six months of service. An employee’s vacation accrual may be adjusted upon hire to provide credit for previous full-time employment at a public service agency. Credit for public service shall only be given for completed years of service as a full-time permanent employee. Public Service credit shall not apply to any other benefits. Sick Leave – Accrued at 8 hours per month. Accruals may be converted upon retirement to cash credit toward health and /or dental insurance premiums or retirement service credits. Paid Parental Leave – After six (6) months of City employment, the City pays up to 30 consecutive days (160 hours) for eligible employees to take paid time to bond with the child upon birth, adoption, or foster placement of a child, up to the age of 17. Holidays – 11 scheduled holidays per calendar year and four (4) personal holidays. Education Reimbursement – Tuition reimbursement allows employees to obtain additional education or training. Annual Physical – Eligible to receive an annual physical examination at the city's expense through the city-provided program.
