Job Summary:
Reporting to the Senior Associate Director of IMATS and Media Center, the Associate Director of Media Operations will work as a member of the IMATS/Media team to serve the teaching, learning, and scholarship needs at Barnard as they relate to media services. In particular, the Associate Director of Media Operations will oversee the operations of our critical service spaces: the IMATS Equipment Room, Sloate Media Center Production Studio, and Post-Production Computer Lab, both by utilizing their own expertise and drawing upon the wealth of knowledge available on the team.

Our team operates the media services arm of IMATS (Instructional Media and Technology Services) and the Sloate Media Center at Barnard College, a historically women's undergraduate liberal arts college affiliated with Columbia University in the city of New York. We provide academic and extracurricular support for learning media skills and content creation on Barnard's campus; working closely with students, staff, and faculty to make technical media and production skill learning accessible to the community at large.

We provide academic and extracurricular support for learning media skills and content creation on Barnard's campus; working closely with students, staff, and faculty to make technical media and production skill learning accessible to the community at large.
Below are some of the programs and services our team provides. Please note that we function as a team, and all team members including the Associate Director of Media Operations collaborate to provide these services - sometimes by taking the lead, and sometimes by supporting others.
- Maintain and operate our essential spaces that support media production on campus.
- Our equipment room lends out audio, photo, video equipment and employs a team of undergraduate student workers.
- Our bookable Media production studio is outfitted with backdrops, lighting, a single occupancy audio booth, and other production equipment.
- Our open use post-production computer lab has Mac computers with Adobe creative suite, as well as a dedicated color grading station with Davinci Resolve studio.
- Collaborate with faculty to support courses by providing technical workshops on podcasting, video production techniques, media editing, and related topics.
- Ideate, develop, and execute student-facing programming:
- Hands-on workshops where we teach media skills (recent examples include DSLR Portrait Photography, Creative Lighting for the Camera, and Audio Production on Set.)
- Film screenings, often with filmmakers participating.
- Talks and panels with media professionals.
- Document academic events on campus through videography & photography services.
- Run the Emerging Filmmaker Mentorship Program (EFMP), which includes:
- hands-on workshops for pre-production, production, and post-production.
- reviewing applications and selecting mentees.
- coordinating and distributing grant funds.
- supporting mentees through the entire filmmaking process from pre to post production.
- showcasing mentees' finished work at the Athena Film Festival.
- Support the student production group The 1 Train Is Delayed.
- Collaborate with other centers and departments on initiatives and programming to further media creation/learning on campus (Recent example is a Podcasting Learning Community in partnership with the Center for Engaged Pedagogy.)
- Individual consultations with students, staff, and faculty for their academic or extracurricular media projects.
- Provide one-on-one or group training for students on media production techniques and post production softwares.
- Occasionally produce videos for special academic projects with a variety of campus partners.
The role of the Associate Director of Media Operations includes:
- Manage the equipment room, which in the 2022-23 academic year fulfilled 1,238 checkouts of 4,524 items to 525 unique patrons. Hire, schedule, train, and manage 15-20 student workers. Oversee the repair and replacement of equipment and manage inventory. Assess equipment room needs and necessary upgrades. Coordinate with vendors for equipment demos. Strategize around long term planning for media equipment needs for the College based on current and emerging trends, partnered course needs, greater institutional needs, and fiscal year budget allocations. Act as service lead for equipment room system (currentlyWebCheckout) and provide training on software to colleagues within and outside of our department (40%)
- Take ownership of the Media Production Studio and Post-production lab. Working with the Senior Associate Director, manage staffing for trainings, patron reservations, and the upkeep and continued improvement of the Media Production Studio overall. Interface with external vendors and other departments to facilitate any necessary facility upgrades or maintenance. Oversee the repair and replacement of equipment and manage the ongoing inventory process. Maintain high-level assessment of studio equipment needs and necessary upgrades based on work done by on-the-ground staff as well as current and emerging trends, institutional needs, and fiscal year budget allocations. (20%)
- Working alongside other team members, facilitate and provide instruction in media-making in the form of public workshops, course support workshops, and EFMP workshops. (15%)
- Engage with undergraduate student programming including the student group The 1 Train is Delayed, open houses, events, NSOP (new student orientation program), and other public facing initiatives to represent Media Services. (10%)
- Independent and team administrative work, such as maintaining project management tasks and updates, fielding emails, and using office productivity tools to establish and maintain workflows. (10%)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Passionate about teaching and mentoring students.
- Personal or professional practice that engages in both the creative and technical aspects of media production.
- Wide range of technical knowledge across media, including use of cameras (camcorders, DSLRs), audio recording and podcasting, and post-production software.
- Ability to balance multiple projects & prioritize core department responsibilities.
- Attention to detail for precise & timely communication.
- Supportive team player.
- Capacity to overcome operational and project management hurdles.
- Eagerness to learn and improve skills.
- Familiarity with administrative tools like Google workspace (email, spreadsheets, calendar) and Zoom.
- Project management experience, preferably in a media field.
- Experience with team management (can be part-time or student worker staff.)
- Master's degree or 4 years commensurate experience.
- Technical expertise in Adobe Suite.
- Proficiency in audio and video media content creation.
- Proven track record of successfully working as part of a team of staff with varying backgrounds and experience levels.
- Experience with teaching media production in a classroom setting.
- Track record of managing workflows in an equipment room, production studio, and/or post-production computer lab.
- At minimum one of the following preferred qualifications:
- Experience with researching & managing purchases for media production or academic administration settings.
- Experience working in a higher education setting.
- On-set film production experience.
- Familiarity with end-to-end video content post-production process.
- Experience with creating and publishing podcasts.
- Physically able to lift and carry production equipment and materials
- Ability to perform customary office tasks such as sitting, walking, standing, and computing for moderate to prolonged periods of time
- 35 hrs/week
- 9 - 5 Monday through Friday default
- flexibility for default hours on a case-by-case basis
- occasional evenings and weekends with comp time for changes
