Job Description

WSCV Telemundo 51 in Miami is seeking an experienced, strategic news leader and journalist to oversee and direct its Newsroom. The VP of News is responsible for the news product of the station, as well as developing and implementing multiplatform content, strategies, and teams to serve the local community as well as drive ratings growth. This individual is responsible for the quality, reliability and credibility of our news product guarding our commitment to the highest standards of journalism. This leader is also responsible for driving a culture of innovation and change in an ever-evolving broadcasting environment.

The VP of News partners with GM and Creative Services to evolve the brand to become the local leader for breaking news and in general high impact journalism and content. This person will also partner with Director of Digital and Multiplatform to develop and implement content and promotional strategies for digital platforms. This role will also partner with the NBC 6 counterpart to create synergies to better utilize teams and resources.

This leader will work with other NBC and Telemundo local News Directors across NBC Owned Station Group to drive growth and innovation.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead engaging news coverage that serves the audience while growing ratings.
  • Supervise, mentor and develop News Managers, Anchors, Reporters and Producers to ensure high levels of performance.
  • Partner with DOT and Ops Managers to embrace a culture of Innovation.
  • Partner with Creative Services to maximize the impact of the local brand.
  • Recruit, develop and retain a diverse strong team.
  • Develop and maintain relationships within the community.
  • Collaborate with Director of Digital and Multiplatform to create strategies and content for all digital platforms.
  • Adhere to Standards and Practices of the NBCU News Group.
  • Champion data and analytics to foster an environment of decision making that embraces research insights.
  • Establish and maintain a collaborative environment between WTVJ and WSCV News personnel and workflows.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in the following areas: Assistant News Director, Executive Producer, or Managing Editor at a broadcast station in a mid to large market.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) both written and verbal.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in content creation for news and digital platforms.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications or related field and/or equivalent work experience.
  • Time management: Ability to meet scheduled deadlines, make split-second decisions on content, ensure ethical standards are always met, and juggle time training new hires.
  • Strong leadership and coaching: Ability to lead and coach staff on all aspects of newsroom work, from shooting video to writing compelling TV news stories.
  • Strong written, verbal and presentation skills.
  • Ability to recognize, create and communicate priorities, strategies as well as market opportunities and challenges to drive growth and performance improvement.
  • Understanding of marketing and audience development in a multi-platform environment.
  • Must be a fierce competitor with a strong desire to win.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Ability to create and execute a winning strategy across multiple platforms.
  • Ability to think “out of the box” and outside of traditional journalistic and news norms regarding use of technology, revenue generation, customer integration and multi-platform approaches for Local Media.
  • Ability to multi-task in a dynamic, content driven, technology intensive environment.
  • Experience preparing departmental budgets, developing and presenting strategic plans.
  • Experience utilizing and analyzing market research.
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local laws impacting newsroom operations.
  • Knowledgeable about FCC rules and laws pertaining to news broadcasting in multi-media platforms and employment and labor regulations.
