The principal role of the Research and Instruction Librarian is to provide general research assistance and instruction services to the Liberty University community, with a primary focus on the undergraduate population. This individual will be familiar with current and emerging technologies for the provision of research and scholarship services and will collaborate with teaching faculty to provide workshops, seminars, in-class instruction, digital tutorials, and research assistance to both residential and distance students. This position reports to the Coordinator, Research and Instruction at the Jerry Falwell Library.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
1. Primarily provides specialized undergraduate research support and instruction via traditional and virtual formats through collaboration with faculty, online subject matter experts, and other campus organizations.
2. Contributes to and supports the library's ongoing initiatives to integrate public services, collections, and instruction in the dynamic environment of networked-based information delivery.
3. Collaborates with faculty and campus departments to develop approaches to information literacy which address student retention and student success.
4. Participates in both formal and informal professional development opportunities such as conference attendance, professional research and writing, and/or completion of continuing education courses as approved by the University.
5. Serves as a liaison librarian to academic department(s) as assigned which entails providing specialized library instruction and research assistance to students and faculty members in the area. It also involves collection development to support the assigned department(s).
6. Communicates and collaborates with the library's internal and external constituencies to provide timely and effective customer service.
7. Demonstrates the ability to work in and with diverse populations.
8. Remains abreast of existing and emerging technologies, processes, products, services and leading industry performance benchmarks.
9. Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU's mission.
Qualifications, Credentials, and Competencies
MLS degree from ALA-accredited institution and strong instruction and digital resource production experience required. Must have demonstrated ability to adopt emerging practices and utilize technologies relevant to reference and instruction in both digital and conventional contexts. A second master's degree and professional library experience preferred.
Effective communication both verbally and in writing. Ability to intuitively reason, analyze information and events, and apply judgment in order to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature. Excellent computer and organizational skills. Regularly lift 20 or fewer pounds. Proof of a valid Virginia driver's license, an acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required.
