Job Summary/Basic Function

The Department of User Services in the James E. Walker Library at Middle Tennessee State University invites applicants for a 12-month full-time, tenure-track faculty position (#401530) as a Student Engagement Librarian at the rank of assistant or associate professor. The start date for the position is negotiable.

Reporting directly to the department chair, the successful candidate will lead the James. E. Walker Library's student engagement initiatives and support high-impact educational practices (e.g., peer-to-peer learning, first-year experiences). The successful candidate will be service-oriented and committed to empowering students with diverse experiences, with a particular focus on supporting at-risk and underrepresented students. The ideal candidate for the Student Engagement Librarian position is an innovative teacher who will develop engaging library education programs and learning experiences, a creative collaborator who will participate in campus-wide outreach efforts, and a student-centered advocate for belonging and well-being.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with library colleagues to develop and deliver engaging library education programs and learning experiences.
  • Serve as the library's liaison to the Office of Student Success.
  • Cultivate and sustain collaborative relationships with campus units and programs supporting academic preparedness, student learning, well-being, and retention.
  • Coordinate the User Services Department's participation in campus-wide student orientation and belonging activities.
  • Plan and execute library orientation events for diverse student populations, including first-year, first-generation, international, and transfer students.
  • Engage in initiatives fostering a welcoming environment for all students.
  • Explore innovative outreach and marketing strategies to connect with students.
  • Plan and host events and workshops related to student engagement, well-being, and belonging.
  • Implement data-driven assessment of outreach initiatives to maximize impact and effectiveness.
  • Contribute to the library's general reference services and the information literacy program.
  • Serve as a liaison to assigned academic departments, units, programs, and offices, including collection development, library instruction, research consultations, and outreach.
  • Participate in professional associations, workshops, conferences, and meetings, and contribute to the profession through research and scholarly activities.
  • Communicate effectively with diverse constituents.

Required Education

A master's degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program is required by the appointment date.

Demonstrated experience leading instruction, teaching, or training
Demonstrated experience managing a project, program, or team
Demonstrated experience centering, collaborating with, and advocating for at-risk or underrepresented student communities
Demonstrated experience developing student outreach activities in a library or higher education setting
Demonstrated experience planning and executing events in a library or higher education setting
Familiarity with high-impact educational practices and other related student success initiatives
Strong commitment to providing excellent service to the public
