Nature of Work

The purpose of this job is to Install, maintain and repair public safety communications, electronics, computers and video systems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.
  • Installs, maintains and repairs radio base station equipment, including remote controls, voice recorders, scanners, audio amplifiers, computer keyboards, satellite receivers, encoding and decoding equipment, digital stats units and other related equipment at the police department headquarters and remote transmitter locations
  • Maintains and repairs traffic radar equipment; produces various reports (such as equipment calibration reports) for use in court in radar cases
  • Installs, maintains and repairs mobile radios, light bars, siren and shotgun mounts
  • Maintains and repairs handheld radios, chargers and shoulder microphones
  • Constructs, installs, maintains and repairs alarm systems; locates, connects and checks telephone lines
  • Designs and fabricates materials needed in the installation of electronic equipment; locates supplies and services needed for fabrication
  • Repairs and modifies a variety of other electronic equipment as needed
  • Installs and diagnoses fire station alerting and civil defense sirens
  • Provides tower site maintenance and powers back up systems
  • Operates a variety of standard power tools and equipment in radio installation and maintenance activities

Minimum Training and Experience
  • High school diploma (or GED equivalent)
--AND--
  • At least four (4) years of related work experience in radio and electronic installation, maintenance and repair work
-OR--
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities

Knowledge of:
  • Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment
  • Practices, tools and equipment associated with the installation, maintenance and repair of various electronic equipment
  • Safety standards and precautions pertaining to installing, maintaining and repairing electronic equipment
  • Federal and state regulations and standards pertaining to radios and other electronic devices
  • Workings of computers, digital electronics, and data transmissions
  • Computers, digital electronics, and data transmissions
Skill in:
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships
  • Performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature
