Job Description Successful candidates for the Public Services positions at KU's Thomas Gorton Music and Dance Library will perform a variety of library duties including the following: 20% - Provide helpful and friendly assistance to library users in a variety of ways including in-person, telephone, and by email. 10% - Answer library user questions and provide general information, directional guidance, and referrals to University sources using appropriate library resources and the Internet. 20% - Check out and return books, periodicals, and other library materials. 10% - Make referrals to library faculty and staff when appropriate. 15% - Perform variety of collection maintenance duties including shelving and lifting. 10% - Assist users with and maintain library equipment. 10% - Work independently of supervision when necessary. 5% - Other related duties as assigned. Required Qualifications During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments) Preferred Qualifications Educational background in music, dance, or theater as evidenced in application material. Experience working in a team environment, as demonstrated in application material. Previous work experience that required providing customer service to library users, as evidenced in application materials. Recent public service work and/or volunteer experience as evidenced in application materials. Library work experience and/or familiarity with KU Libraries as a user as evidence in application materials. Work experience that required computer and research skills with Voyager library system, database and web-searching and word processing, as evidenced in application materials. Work study eligibility. Availability to work all year including breaks. Coursework or work experience that demonstrates knowledge of the Library of Congress classification system.
