The Performing and Visual Arts department’s mission is to expand the lives of our audience (and employees) within and beyond the Institution’s gates through the power of the performing and visual arts. The Performing and Visual Arts staff working in residence halls support the department operations through inspiring, stimulating, and fostering the growth of our pre-professional students. Our team consists of a Director, Assistant Director, four Residence Assistants and a Resident Nurse. Commitment to work a full eight weeks is required.

About Your Compensation

Compensation for this salaried position is $1,263/week for up to 9 weeks (starting in June).

About Your Work Day

  • Trains, supervises and evaluates 4 Resident Assistants (RAs) in their responses to the needs of 24 to 50 residents each.
  • Plans and implements activities that serve as on-the-job training and that promote opportunities for personal growth and development for a diverse staff team.
  • Evaluates the performance of RAs/Office Manager in the areas established by the community in accordance with established procedures.
  • Encourages and contributes to the development of positive working relationships between the RA’s, Office Manager, Resident Nurse, Housekeeping Staff, Maintenance Crew and Dining Hall staff.
  • Participates in the management of student behavior needs and issues in the halls by responding to incidents, meeting with students, and pursuing appropriate administrative or student conduct actions.
  • Provides consultation and referral for students on residential matters (e.g., mediation of interpersonal conflicts, providing relevant information, interpreting policies and procedures).
  • Assists staff and residents in establishing an atmosphere and encouraging behavior that ensure relative freedom, quiet, privacy, security and a sense of responsibility in the residence halls.
  • Shapes an environment conducive to academic and personal development.
  • Assists in coordinating assessment of student needs and interests.
  • Coordinates and supports hall/community efforts to provide academic, social and cultural activities which foster the development of positive citizens, scholars and leaders.
  • Promotes intercultural understanding, rightful place, and sense of belonging in the community through activities, training, supervision, and interpersonal communication.
  • Trains and guides RA staff and students in the development and implementation of educational activities that serve a diverse student population.
  • Travel to local stores and hospitals as needed.

About the Referral Program

Chautauqua Institution’s Referral Bonus Program is a talent solution to recruit, develop, and retain a diverse workforce that encompasses all the skills and experience necessary to deliver on our goals and objectives. Chautauqua Institution will provide a $500 referral bonus (less taxes) for active employees referring a new candidate who is hired and remains employed for at least 90-days from the first physical date of work. In the case of seasonal positions working less than 6-months, the new candidate must remain actively employed for at least 30-days from the first physical date of work and until the closing date of the season. The closing date of the season is the last Sunday in August.

About Your Schedule

Chautauqua Institution and Chautauqua Hotel Company offer flexible schedules, full and part-time, for seasonal employment during summer operations starting annually each June and concluding in August. Seasonal employment may be available earlier (pre-season) and beyond season (post-season) based on business needs and candidate availability. Schedules typically include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays as a requirement.

While you will confirm your final schedule with management at the time of an interview and offer of employment, you should generally anticipate the following schedule options for this position:

Pre-season Schedule: Pre-Season administrative work may be completed remotely or on-site. Up to 10 hours/week, starting eight weeks prior to the first day of operations.

In-season Schedule: Will be primarily scheduled to work Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for an average of 37.5 hours/week. Scheduled hours will include evenings, weekends, and holidays based on business needs.

About Living on the Grounds

Chautauqua Institution may provide limited housing options on our grounds or assist you with locating nearby housing arrangements for select opportunities based on business needs. Housing is not an option for many positions and may be of a cost to you. Candidates should assume there are no employer-provided or employer-assisted housing options available for this position unless it is otherwise stated.

This position offers employer-provided housing within the residence hall, which includes a private room and bathroom.
