Position Description

Advertised Job Summary

USCB Library is seeking a service-oriented and collegial Research and Instruction Librarian, as a member of the Research and Instruction Team at USCB Library, provides information literacy instruction and research assistance primarily to USCB Library students and faculty on the USCB Bluffton and Beaufort Campuses. Research consultations are provided in person, by phone, and online through e-mail, text, and chat services. This position serves as the liaison for a variety of subject areas, determined in collaboration with the candidate's capabilities, and the responsibilities of the other research and information literacy librarian team. All library faculty are responsible for providing research services and instruction for first-year foundation courses including English 101, 102 and UNIV 101 and needs of the Bluffton campus faculty, students, staff, and community primarily, and for the Beaufort campus when needed. The Research and Instruction Librarian provides support for access services in Bluffton and occasionally in Beaufort when needed. This position participates in collection development and collection maintenance for areas of assigned responsibility, and the State documents collection. The incumbent works a flexible schedule of 37.5 hours per week, including nights and weekends, and is expected to be available at either campus library location (Beaufort or Bluffton) as requested.

Essential Duties

* Provides digital, and in-person research service and instruction for students, faculty, staff, and other library users.

* Assists in managing the research and instructional program for the libraries including instructing users in finding and evaluating appropriate print and electronic resources, answering research and other help desk questions using multiple communication methods.

* Designs and teaches library instruction sessions for classes in a variety of disciplines. Works closely with faculty members to ensure that library instruction meets student needs.

* Collaborates with other librarians to assess the effectiveness of library services.

* Creates and maintains LibGuides and other library resources in multiple formats (e.g., video).

* Creates library instruction tutorials and/or other digital learning objects for general research needs, specific programs, classes, or assignments.

* Creates library displays, library newsletters, and other library outreach materials as needed.

* Assists faculty with literature reviews and collection development needs.

* Evaluates and develops print and electronic collections for specific subjects. Other collection development activities include evaluating donations and weeding as needed.

* Occasionally provides coverage for circulation services including assisting patrons with circulation related transactions, handling fines, printing charges, item check-ins and check-outs, on weekdays, weekends, and evenings as needed.

* Responsible for closing the library when needed, including supervising support staff and assisting with opening or closing procedures.

* Provides coverage for the Beaufort campus library as needed.

* Provides supervision for student workers in the library as needed.

Other Duties

* Trains and supervises support staff.

* Keeps statistics and reports on activities.

* Participates in professional service.

* Engages in professional development and scholarship activities.

* Other duties as assigned; these may include, but are not limited to, shelving, shelf-reading, participating in inventories, tagging books, etc.

Required Education and Experience

* ALA-accredited master's degree in library and information science.

* Recent experience in an academic library.

Preferred Qualifications

* Recent library instruction or teaching experience, preferably at the college level.

* Recent experience providing reference services.

* Working familiarity with Blackboard, LibGuides, and digital repositories.

* Experience creating information literacy instruction.

* Familiarity with the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education.

* Experience working with online students.

* Experience with Ex Libris and Alma.

* Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

* Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
