Title: Library Circulation Assistant

  1. Position Summary
Responsible, under the Circulation Supervisor, for the performance of duties and services provided by the circulation unit: Circulation Records, Bibliographic Records, Stacks Maintenance, Equipment Maintenance, Interlibrary Loan, Reserves, and Reference as described below.
  1. Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions
  • Circulation services. Provides circulation services for the entire collection.
  • Copy cataloging. Downloads bibliographic records from OCLC or other source and to make available for use in the integrated library system.
  • Bibliographic record creation. Creates, maintains and converts bibliographic and other library records for use in circulation and serials.
  • Stack supervision. Monitors condition of library stacks, equipment and supplies as necessary.
  • Computer and equipment maintenance. Troubleshoots equipment problems and hardware and software problems of computers. Performs basic maintenance.
  • Ready reference. Provides ready reference to patrons, refers more complex questions to librarians.
  • Cashiering. Collects and reconciles library fines and fees.
  • Supervision. Trains and supervises student workers.
Secondary Functions
  • Performs basic office duties such as filing, word processing, and answering phones.
  • Documents procedures and guidelines based on practices and policies.
  • Maintains and reports statistical information on circulation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Hours
  • 25 hours per week, year round. Hours are flexible to include nights and weekends.
  • Flexible schedule to keep the library operational, including nights and weekends.
  • Must be able to adjust hours when necessary.

  1. Education and Experience
General.

Knowledge of the interrelatedness of various library operations and the principles and practices of supervision. Punctuality, reliability, flexibility and proper professional decorum. Pleasing personality, ability to deal comfortably with a wide range of people. Strong public service commitment

Minimum education.

High school diploma. Bachelor's degree or higher preferred.

Minimum experience.

Experience in a library performing library support activities in public service, circulation, stacks and building maintenance.

Technical skills.

Mastery of an integrated library system to perform a variety of circulation functions. Ability to use a computer, typewriter, adding machine, audiovisual equipment, photocopier and microform machine to perform daily tasks of the position.

  1. Physical Requirements
Duties involve light work in an office and community setting and requires a minimum of physical effort with intermittent sitting, standing, climbing stairs, and walking inclines. Must be able to lift 20 pounds, walk the campus with ease, and have excellent motor skills. Must have finger dexterity. Must be able to communicate information and ideas so that others will understand.
  1. Other Requirements
  • This is a part time, nonexempt position. Twenty-five hours per week will be the general rule. However, depending on the project cycles and workflow demands of the department, additional hours or workday schedule changes may be occasionally required. Must be willing and able to work nights and weekends and a varying schedule.
  • Observes all safety and health regulations and works in accordance with safe work procedures and policies of the University. Reports unsafe acts/conditions and injuries in a timely and proper manner.
